Up riding some awsome single track on the KDX and one of the guys in our group has his chain wad up 3 times and on the 3 rd time is was up hill at full throttle so we stoped and took the chain guide off and tightened his chain on the side of the trail:face-icon-small-dis. Then we get going and he has a really tough time shifting so he is really stomping on the shift lever. We are going along and he stops. Our group stops and he tells us the bike is stuck in neutral and wont shift. We get over there and the shifter is limp like a clutch lever with no cable. So we take the clutch cover off and try to jimmy it back to no avail. So we decide to push/pull it out.
What I am asking is if any body has any idea what could have happened? It happened on a 2006 Kawasaki KX450F. My theory is that when the chain came off and wadded up under full throttle it bent the shifter shaft and his jamming on it disconnected the shifter for from the gears?

So the chain broke 3 times in 1 day? In regards to that, I'd look at the swing arm bushings. I've never seen it happen on a bike, but I've seen several 4wheelers that would break chains constantly b/c the swing arm had side to side play in it from worn bushings.

As far as the shifting issues...I'm not sure what that is but I can't imagine a chain breaking and getting wadded up at full throttle would be good for anything :)

He finally got an excuse to get a new KTM 300. It will be interesting to find out what the mechanics find inside the bottom end.
