Any 7.3 powerstroke owners?

i have pretty much given up trying to figure out my fuel mileage on my 2001 7.3. The problem is how to know when your tank is full. I can usually get 2-3 gallons in after it clicks off once. I put in a few ounces at a time and then quit when I get tired of it.

The only way would be to fill er up as much as possible 4 or 5 times and then figure out how many miles and how much fuel.

BTW, does anyone have a part # for the NAPA air filter that flows 65% more air?
kbeefy nailed the part #, but don't buy it from Napa- go to fleetfilter.com, you can get 2 shipped for about the same price as one from Napa.

My 03' has the larger oem retangle filter. Would I benefit from the Wix# 6637 / Napa# 46637 filter? Is it very loud without the factory airbox?

is it easy to install?

yeah, just take the airbox out and clamp the new filter in it's place. A piece of 4" exhaust tubing or a 3 1/2" pvc coupling or even a 6oz tuna can with both ends cut off can be used as a coupling. It's not absoloutly necessary on all trucks but should be done anyways to maintain a good seal. I've had mine slip off without one.

You will benefit with anything bigger than what you have. My guess is that if you go out to the excursion and look right now, I'll bet $10 that your "airflow indicator" says that your filter is plugged. 99-03 powerstrokes have the worst air intake system out of any diesel pickup built. The AFE Stage II cold air intake claims a 50 horse gain just by itself. What most people don't realize is that intake and exhaust don't effect fuel economy as much as they think, but instead are needed to get rid of extra heat. Heat will cause you some inefficiencies in power and thus can effect fuel economy a little bit. The cooler the air, the more dense it is and the more power you can derive with that air. You could do as little as drop in a k&n filter into your box and it will help out. As far as noise, you will hear it a bit, but it isn't anything too overpowering. My $.02.

The 6637 is easy to install but does make a bit of intake noise- you can fab up an airbox for it and the noise all but goes away (I still need to do this). I highly recommend NOT putting a K&N in the stock airbox- go back up to my pics and look at the second one, that is the factory airbox lid (the clean side!!!) with a K&N drop in filter in there. An old sock over the end of the intake tube will filter better than the stock setup or a K&N.

I agree that there are much better solutions than a drop in k&n, but if you are looking for something simple and cheap a k&n drop-in will be a lot better than doing nothing at all.

2-99 Power Stokes
F250 EXT Cab 6-speed, K&N air filter, otherwise stock 13-15mpg empty 9-12mpg depending on witch trailer its hooked to.
F350 CREW CAB 6 speed dually,K&N air filter.Fuel mileage same.
Both trucks are high mileage,184000 & 292000,And still run & look great with minimal work done to them.

99 Powerstroke with Diamond Eye turbo back 4" exhaust, Diablo chip, K&N filter(this is the next thing I get rid of) SkyJacker lift and 35" BFG's. Get a steady 15 mpg on the highway and 11-12 while pulling my 27' enclosed v-nose.

I just installed a 6673 on mine today after watching this thread. It took all of 15 minutes to do and I can certainly see where this filter will flow alot more air. I just went for a ride and under 2500 rpm it is no louder than stock. at 2500 when the turbo spools up you can hear the whistle come on but not too bad at all. I can't wait to see what it does running to Anchorage and back with the race trailer on Wednesday over the mountains. :)

I'll post this up one more time for the K&N crowd:
airbox_lid.jpg

That's the CLEAN side of my stock airbox with a K&N drop in filter installed when I bought the truck (almost didn't buy the truck because of this right here, luckily I knew to check the turbo and it's fine or I would have passed on a pretty good deal). The K&N complete intakes are slightly better, especially if you use a prefilter, but I wouldn't run one on my truck. If the 6637 doesn't suit your fancy go with either the AIS or an AFE setup, better flow than stock and better filtration.

The AFE Stage II has the largest amount of surface area and is the best kit out there hands down. It will provide more air than most of our modifications even need, but I like to know that I will never have a problem with too little air.
