Any 7.3 powerstroke owners?

I've got a 97 F250 Crew with 4:10 gears and 225,000 miles and still ticking. She gets 18mpg if I keep it under 70mph, and about 13mpg pulling a 4place closed trailer. Some day I will pony up for a newer 7.3

Bought a 96 crewbab used in 97 with about 30,000 on it. from the time we got that til now I get 15-17 empty IF you keep it under 60mph. I throw a cabover camper on it and a trailer behind it and it is down to 9mpg. Always has been. I took it into the dealer several times when we first got it and was told there is nothing wrong with it and that is all it will get. It is bone stock. I had a chevy with a 6.0 gas motor and it had more power than my powerstroke and got better mileage too. I love the truck, just don't care for the motor. This will be my last diesel.

2001 CC SB 3.73 gears stock tires. Muffler replaced by Walker unit which opens up the exhaust. Air filter replaced with NAPA unit that flows 50% more air. I get 21-22 at 55 mph 19.5-20 at 63, which is 1800 rpm. I average 17.4 in the summer.

Howdy in AK fellas!

Ultra, don't be fooled by the 7.3's mediocre performance, that truck has LOTS of potential. Don't let Ford's idea of how it should run spoil you on diesels, it can easily put that chevy 6.0 to shame.

yea my 7.3 still runs great with 300,000 miles. only problems were injectors, crank, pistons....normal wear after that many miles

I've got an '02 crew cab long bed F350. It's got Tony Wildman's Custom Tunes, AFE Stage II, Banks Wicked Wheel, ITP Boost Annihilator, 4" downpipe to 5" exhaust with 6" tip, Edge Juice w/ Attitude for display purposes only (do not buy this chip, it will dissapoint you if you own a 7.3), and finally a Zoodad Modification.

I normally see 16.5 at a constant 75 while hauling sailboat fuel, but hooking on to the haulmark inclosed I see about 9 (mainly cuz we're in a hurry to the mountain). From what I've read and seen from experience with my pickup, they say if you keep your post turbo EGT's as close as you can to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, you will experience your best fuel economy. Of course this isn't possible with a trailer behind you, but for everyday driving I have seen as high as 19.5 while keeping it there. If that isn't enough for you the single best thing you can do to improve fuel economy is invest into a set of aftermarket injectors. I've heard, without a change in driving habit, that injectors alone can increase fuel economy as much as 2-3 mpg.

I don't believe you.

Hey guys,
I have a 2000 f350 crew cab 4x4 7.3 liter and it has 3000 dollars in banks stuff, intake, full exhaust, chip, trans shift mod,big head waist gate, and some other stuff. And I have never seen over 14 mpg, there is no way anybody is getting 19 mpg with that engine. you might get better if you have a 2wd short box, reg cab. but thats not a truck.

The good news is that most of us getting good mileage don't care if you believe us. :)

I can get 19 if i drive 60 and I've got a leveling kit on the front and bags in the back. It may have helped me that I got 255/85 R16's on so I get a little further on each rotation, almost like having higher top end gears. Get your foot out of it if you want better mpg. Btw, banks is just a name because of all of it's advertising, get real performance equipment through guys that make specialized aftermarket parts. My .02, keep on getting 14mpg. :beer;

I just wish you would divulge the secrets instead of making the rest of us wonder how the hell you do it! :D

02 F250 XLT supercab shortbox 4x4 auto (7900lbs with me and a full tank) with MBRP 4" exhaust, Ford AIS, Zoodad mod and an Edge Evo II rolling on 295/75/16 BFG ATs @ 65mph yielded me 20.3mpg one way and 19.5 the other direction. Highway miles, unloaded and towing nothing. I run 55-60psi in my tires and use 0w40 Rotella Synthetic, pump diesel with Stanadyne Lubricity (purple) in every tank. I also have a toolbox in the truck.

I think that's everything :)

10mpg if I go anything over 2300 rpm's consistantly..and it doesn't seem to care clear up to 2600rpm...and it doesnt seem to care about the load. Unfortunately that is getting run off the road around here...wish I had a splitter and a larger fuel cell! Oh I long for 75mph at 1800-1900 rpms with a big load.

410 one ton short wheel base dually..k&N, some kind of controller edge I think, and 4 inch exhaust. 150,000 towing most of the way...awesome pickup..wish it was new! Love this pickup and love not having to spend $50,000 to replace it!

I don't think guys are getting accurate mileage..diesel foaming and such you need to make sure it's 100% liquid full before basing your calculations.

I'll have to make a road trip unloaded to see what I get now. And all my mileage estimates are hand calculated and fillup is done the same way every time, to better ensure accuracy. I run my tires at 50psi front and 70 psi rear, that might help a bit.

Fbomb started it... here

Diesel MPG is the biggest lie since your dick size in high school. Ask 10 people and get 10 different answers. The bigest problem is that no one is happy with only a 200hp motor anymore. When the mid 90's fords and dodges were out there out there wasnt a probelm getting high teens or low 20's for mpg. Now that the new trucks are 300+ hp they dont get **** for mileage. If you have a older powerstroke do as someone else said and keep it under 2000 rpm and there should be no problem 15+ mpg.

I like having the low end power just wish I had some more low RPM cruising ability..then this would be the perfect hauler. Oh no your trailer is bigger then mine! Don't make me go shopping!:D:D:D

loves the goose..bumper pulls are lame-O..having your bedroom with you is nice as well

Powerstroke

Just bought my first diesel and it is a 2003 Powerstroke Excursion. It is completely stock engine wise I average 14mpg with 35" tires.

It is a California model and I was wondering if anyone knows what that involves.

Is there anything I should do right off the bat to improve mileage besides a turbo back 4" exhaust?

you are exactly right it is because of all this new smog **** that they have to put on all the new rigs. its bull

Ditto on the goose, my friends told me they tow nice but I never would have believed how nice without experiencing it myself.

I was gonna do a gear splitter, decided to try a turbo instead. It helps but I still don't like the jump between 2nd and 3rd (AT), so it may still be an option for me. I'm thinking an underdrive because I have plenty of top end, especially around here. No real freeways to cruise on. An overdrive unit would probably work real nice for you.

an air intake might help, but the best thing you can do to get good mileage in these things is keep your foot out of it. 14mpg on 37's isn't bad, are you correcting for speed/distance differences due to the wrong size tires on there?
