.....And some say it's a harmless drug.

A interesting thought. Maybe they should legalize it so they can tax it like tabacco and booze, so we can pay off this F***ing stimulus bill. How many third strike prisoners are clogging up our prisons on pocession charges? Other then that they made a lot of rope that was used by our armed forces during WWII. George Washington and i believe Thomas Jefferson grew it on their plantations. Just a lil food for thought.

lets shed a little light on karls post....you are saying that all drugs legal and illegal are bad (of course not including perscriptions or over the counter meds used for a purpose) You claim that attempting to justify the legalization of marijuana by comparing it the ill effects of of smoking and drinking... My question to you is, what medical significance does nicotine and alcohol have? (by alcohol I'm talking beer, wine, and your typical brown bottle liquor) I assume you are going to tell me that a beer a day is good for you, wine has chemicals in it that has been proven to break down fatty cells, and liquor could be used as a crude anesthesia in an emergency situation.

My point is that marijuana has a vast amount of medical benefits. I don't care for the legalization of it but I do feel that it should become some sort of a perscription medication. On that note...

When an arguement that marijuana be legalized or is "not that bad" is posted, the same error is on this web site every time. The error is called a False Analogy. It is when a weak, even far-fetched comparison; using a comparison in which the differences outweigh the similarities, or in which the similarities are irrelevant to the claim the analogy is intended to support. People try to justify illegal drug use by identifying legal drugs that may or may not have as bad or worse effects

True... but drug use is a morality statement and therefore should be based or compared to other morality judgments that a society makes. This will allow for an accurate comparison to the reasonableness of the morality judgments being made...

Why does our society make "bad" drugs legal, while other "not so bad" drugs illegal. Why does the fact that more people incorrectly use perscription drugs then people that use illegal drugs not matter.

This is a drug / chemical use issue and needs to be talked about on a whole... especially when it seems that most judgments for the legality of the substance is not a technical issue but a political / moral / social stigmatizm issue..

Just my thoughts..

Unfortunately in this day and age there's not much left that is still considered "Harmless". With all the hate and nit picking, someone will always have some sort of study (reputable or not) to discredit anything they want.

Hey.... I just read on the interwebs that red blood causes Lymphoma!

No, you guessed wrong, I am not going to defend alcohol and cigarette use and I am certaily not going to fall into the same error logic (false analogy) in using alcohol benefits to indict marijuana. And certainly, Marijuana is available as a prescription and I am sure it has medical benefits. I am not sure I would use the word "vast", but like oxycontin, morphine and even prednizone and interferon they have their uses and dangers.

My only defense of alcohol might be that it has another use other than getting high like the illegal use of drugs. Alcohol can be thought of as a food and not as a drug. When one uses marijuanna it is to get high. I have seen probably as many people destroy their lives over marijuanna as alcohol and both at the same time....oh well....note that I am merely comparing the two here. I am not using one to justify or indict the other.

On the value side of my arguement, I am only saying that personally I would not smoke cigarettes or get drunk around my children and as a parent, I would rather the world view illegal drugs as bad. That way they would hear it from all sides rather than from just me so there is less of a chance of a mixed message...just my preference and how I would vote.

Certainly, and I am not saying that it is a sin to justify marijuna by comparing to alcohol and cigarettes. I am just saying justifying marijuana by comparing it to the cause of over half the accidents on our highways or one of the highest risk factors in lung cancer is an extremely weak arguement indeed.

On the values side of things. I would say in a perfect world everyone would get high snowmobiling. Since it is not and I am not bigger than the tobacco industry and prohibition was repealed, I am happy that I am not the only person that thinks getting high (any method) is bad...Just my vote.

thanx!

:beer; Here's to trying to get this thread back on topic and not down the same road it has taken time and time again.

I believe the thread was concerning the use of pot and the possibility of having your balls fall off. I do and they haven't, and that my friend was the topic being discussed here. *******!

Not so fast.
As with every headline grabbing announcement of a new shocking new study... let's look at some facts.
http://www.emcom.ca/health/testicular.shtml
"Testicular cancer is a rare cancer, with an age-adjusted incidence of 4.2/100,000 in Canada."

Even if pot smoking increases the risk of T.C. by 70% --- the incidence goes from 4.2/100,000 to 7.14/100,000
To put this in perspective.... the incidence of lung cancer attributed to SMOKING is between 90 and 100/100,000 (mid-1990 rates).

Not a smoker... but I hate when facts get in the way of certain people's agendas.
