I would seal up the seams of the airbox and then do a frogzskin filter on the top side. They are available from Parts Unlimited and straightline performance. They just stick on and work slick. Same type of filter material SLP uses on their flow rite vents. http://www.frogzskin.com/

really? you want dirt, dust, and sand that gets into your airbox/motor to be removed through you exhaust? that would not be so good for you bearings, pistons, cylinders, the entire motor...
Obviously I wouldn't want sand in my motor, but if it's already in there (which in this case, it was, because that's where they found it) then I'm saying I would think that if it could get in, it would also get out. He rode for the rest of the day after first experiencing issues, I'd think that would be plenty of cycles to push the sand out of the exhaust. I have a hard time imagining there being enough sand in his airbox to slowly feed into the intake throughout his whole day and end up leaving a bunch in the cylinders for the teardown.
