Alpha 1 On The Scale

Country Cat just posted a video on FB with a 2019 Alpha 165 on the scale full of oil and coolant, but with the fuel tank drained as much as they could. They also weighed a 2018 M8000 Sno Pro 162 with the same fluid levels. Note Alpha does have QS3 shocks whereas the SP just has regular floats and coilover front arm shock.

2019 165 Alpha M8000: 475#
2018 162 SnoPro M8000: 481#

I'd rather see a fully dry or fully wet weight, but this is what we have been given. Cat's listed capacities if people want to run their calculators and assume some fluid weights:
Fuel Tank: 11.7 gal
Oil system: 3.25 quarts
Coolant: 5 quarts
 
The Ctec2 oil is listed as having a density of .845 which is equal to 7.05 lb/gal
Cat antifreeze is listed as having a density of 1.10 which is equal to 9.18 lb/gal

So total fluids should be: ((3.25/4)*7.05)+((5/4)*9.18) = 17.2 lbs. putting the Alpha at 457.8 lbs "dry"

So If a person takes off the tunnel bag, tool kit, and other junk It would probably be close to the 451 listed on the website.

Don't forget chain case oil, brake fluid, and shock oil need to be considered to truly get to dry weight.
 
I thought about those, the case is good with 8 oz. of fluid so .44 lbs. the brake lines I have no clue about but I'm assuming 12 oz. so .82 lbs. and the shock fluid has a density of .837 and need maybe 6 oz. so .37 lbs.

So another 2 lbs. Still, Cats numbers are pretty close. So last years number must have been off by quite a bit for the 162 Mountain Cat.
 
good ol country cat, weighing sno pros next to the current top model to get big of diff as possible, like last year.
that doesn't seem like big enough weight gap considering the 18 MC was lighter than sno pro.

It was an in-season snopro, not the early release. So since that has the aluminum driveshaft last years mountain cat would actually be slightly heavier than the snopro due to QS shocks on the mtn cat, right? They said they didn't have last years mountain cat on the floor to compare and this was the closest thing they had.
 
the old gas tank was 11.7 my 2019 mountain cat is listed at 10.3 I wounder if the alfa is different...

Im pretty sure the 10.3 is for e-start.
My 18 mtn cat said 10.3 also and it didn't have e-start

Cat site says new for 2019, ceramic coated muffler.
Spec sheet says stainless steel.
And Fuel tank 11.7gal.

idk, I can't keep up, but assumed the MC is the lightest. I mean, how about that fancy new gas tank LOL!
but I doubt the QS shocks add as much weight as that steel spring on the front of the skid on the Sno pro.
 
Really, what does it matter? None of the modern sleds are obscenely heavy? I weigh 150# and can throw a Pro Climb around with ease. I suppose it gives us something to chew as we await the upcoming season.
 
Still, Cat could knock out another 25 lbs if they wanted too, by going to a chassis that only handles the 2 stroke and not the 4 stroke motor. These things are beefier than needed. I know many are happy with getting more (weight) for their money but less is more! Oh well lets see if a new chassis is coming for 2020. Good on them for heading in the right direction though.

I think most people are fairly happy with the cat chassis even with it being a little heavy it is strong and can actually survive more than a season of riding. Now I do agree with you though whether the next chassis is lighter or not it should be specifically built for the two stroke. It could definitely get narrower and more balanced by going two stroke specific. But even before then I would like to see them take what they have and add a factory belt drive, rework the intake, ceramic coat the pipe and get rid of the heat shield. These things would drop about 20 lbs based on what I can drop doing them aftermarket. Couple more pounds to lose in the snowflap, skis, and seat. That get's us down to about 425-430 an maintains a strong chassis. Add a can and I am close enough to 400 to be content.

Polaris and doo chassis both need brace kits. Cat doesn't need to stoop that low. Unless one likes sacrificing strength and having disposable sleds after 2 years.
