Advice on where to rent and ride near Salt Lake?

Hey guys,
just joined the forum hoping I could get some good info from here. Myself and a co worker will be in salt lake city the 5th-8th of April. Would there be any good riding this time of year and if so where would be the best place to rent and ride from near Salt Lake City? We both ride sleds but mostly midwest trail riding so no mountain riding experience whatsoever. How hard is it to get a guide? Can we rent gear as well? I was thinking maybe just an afternoon of riding and having a guide show us around and take us to the deep powder. I'm not real interested in trail riding as I do that at home all the time. I want to experience mountain riding (carving, etc.). Thanks

PS we won't have a truck or anyway to haul rentals so need to rent from somewhere that we can ride sleds out of. Very space limited so need to be able to rent gear, helmets, etc.

There will be snow in the mountains, but its going to be heavy and wet. You might get lucky and get some fresh pow, but again it will be spring snow.

As far as rentals go there are quite a few guys renting out of Heber which is about as close to SLC as you will be able to find any snow this time of year.

Talk to Mtnpull on here. He can set you up with the sleds at the trailhead east of Heber, no need for truck and trailer. www.uintahrecreation.com He can also point you in the right direction for riding. You may not get to ride much powder this time of year, as it depends on the storms, but even if it's old snow, spring riding in Utah is great!

this was may 1st last year:

thanks for the tips guys. I talked to Adam at the rental place in Heber City and he said that he should be able to hook us up with some sleds for a day. He said we will need to get a rental with a hitch to pull the sleds up to where the snow is so we are looking into switching are rental car for a SUV. Is there anyone who would be interested in showing us around on the the sleds for a day? I think we would enjoy it alot more if we were with someone who new the area and could get us to the good snow. We don't need anything crazy as we haven't ridin mountains before but would love to experience what Utah has to offer. Our two options would be april 6th or 7th. Thanks

just got off phone with rental car place. She said that no rental car places will have anything available with a hitch and they don't allow towing with rental vehicles so I'll have to figure that angle out yet.

If you rent an SUV most of them do have the tow package. I rent to out of state folks all the time with suv rental cars with tow packages. But no worries. Worst case scenario and you can use one of my trucks. If Lake Creek has enough snow in a couple weeks we will just deliver. Either way we'll get you out on the mountain.:thumb:

This is the way to go, Adam is number one in service.

RUGGED RENTALS..

Look up Rugged Rentals in Salt Lake City....I have used them in the past for truck rentals....that's their specialty...If I remember right...they have recievers, but no hitches...but I think Adam could hook you up there....
Would love to ride on the 6th or 7th....don't know Heber all that well, but I'm sure we could still have some fun..

Steve, I would love for you to take us out even if you don't know the area too well. I'm sure you know it better than us! I'm more interested in having someone with us to keep us away from hidden dangers that one from the midwest may not be aware of and to keep us from getting lost. Let me know if you're interested.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we did end up renting from adam at uintarecreation. Adam was excellent to deal with and went out of his way to make sure we had a good experience. He was able to drop the sleds off for us on the mountain so that all worked out well. We ended up riding by ourselves but didn't run into any issues. Just made sure to pay extra attention to where we were at all times. I could see how you could become lost out there if you weren't carefull. The snow was hard with 3-6 inches of slushy snow on top but we still had a good time with it. Hopefully next time we can get into a little bit of fresh powder. Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions on rental locations and riding areas.
Tom
