Advice for 6.0 Ford Diesel

uugghh... i hate when people say this.

these motors have tons of issue STOCK... "modding" these pieces of **** actually makes them better! There is a reason that the 03 and 04 6.0s almost bankrupt ford. My "advice" on this engine would be to sell it! With that all being said, these things can be very awesome trucks when done up correctly. They can make some great power and are super smooth AND can be reliable after they are built correctly. If i were to buy a 6.0 stroker the list would be as follows:

Arp headstuds, oem headgaskets, bulletproof oil cooler, custom tuned ficm, keep the stock intake system, 4" turbo back exhaust, egr delete, sct tuner with innovative diesel tunes, edge insight cts for gauges and a garret 38r.

This guy hit the nail right on the head

I have a 2003 6.0 and love it! I did change for a cold air intake and an Edge Chip (Juice with attitude). Next will be an EGR delete, dual straight 4" turbo back and a bypass oil filter. No its not studded.

I have almost 81,000 miles on it now with no issues. Its lifted with 35's on it. I get about 18 (unloaded Highway) and towing 12~14.

Heres the trick on 6.0. First off, use stock filters! They are Patented. So when you buy and aftermarket oil filter, its too short! Guess what... Your oil gets bypassed because the drain valve isnt closed! All because the filter is too short! So buy Motorcraft Filters for it! There is plenty of info on this stuff. You just need to be a little educated on them and you should be fine.

Also when chipped (with any diesel), No need to dial it up when towing. Your asking for trouble! Like I said, it doesnt matter what diesel... You'll grenade it sooner or later. So leave it on mileage when towing. JMHO

Good thread. I have owned 3 6.0ls 2 dioramas, and a spartan tuned 6.4l. I always come back to the 6.0 as my favorite. My current truck is a 06 f250 6.0l with 136k miles on it. I bought it used and first thing I did was new OE oil/fuel/air filters, egr delete, and full blown coolant flush, and rosella T6 full synthetic oil. This thing runs great.

We run bullet proof EGR and oil coolers, they work awesome-lifetime warranty, arp studs, cut the soft seats out while your doing the studs and have the stellite put in... pretty good motor once you fix all the factory defects..lol Usually have a couple we are fixin up around here at any given time

Do yourself a favor and don't dump any money into the POS 6.0. I finally got rid of it after it left me stranded for a 4th time. I had everything done... arp studs, egr delete, on it's 2nd turbo, all new injectors, 3rd FICM, HPOP, and the list goes on. Only 90,000 miles. And it all started to happen 1 month after the warranty was up.

Sorry about your luck! I have had really good luck with mine.

sell it and buy a new 6.7L ford . My new one is sooooooo much better than my chipped 6.0L. good luck with it , its not if its gonna give u problems but when and how many times.

studs
egr delete
SCT with custom tunes(matt from gearhead does a great job)
gauges so you can monitor your oil temp which is the most important
new oil cooler when you do the egr delete
4" exhaust
make sure you have the updated oil return line and feed line for your turbo if it is a 2004 or older 6.0l

Some people run them stock and never have issues and others have nothinig but problems.

Also change your oil as recommended and use factory oil filters.

Like someone said before. Best thing you could do is sell it. We have had all brands different diesels. We couldn't keep the Ford 6.0 out of the shop. We traded it in. FYI we still have two 99 and 00 7.3's. The 6.0 was the biggest pile I have ever seen. Why would anyone mod these things out if they can't stay running in stock form.

Dump the thing.

Sell the thing and get a 6.7. I have had friends that have had nothing but trouble, turbos 1 of witch is on his third, injectors, head gaskets, egr coolers, injector control modules, just to name a few. Dumped my 6.0 and got a 6.7 pulls 24000lbs great. PS you better set the cruse or you,ll get a ticket the thing likes to roll along.

The new 6.7l is the nicest diesel I have ever been inside. I love my 6.0 though as I can't afford to sell my truck and put $30k with it to buy a new one.

So if we add up all the suggestions in this thread.....basically replace everything that is attached to the shortblock (many items 2 or 3 times) and you *might* have an ok truck.....sweet sign me up.

Agreed!! Don't waste your money! We had four of them in our family and every single one of them was a complete POS, and i am a die hard ford guy!!

If it's running well, sell it. Before it's not and your wallet is smouldering.

They're a great truck, when they run fine. The other 95% of the time, they're not worth the headache.

Just dumped $6400 into mine. New oil pan (washington de-icer), new injectors, studs in the head, coolant filter. Previously I did the EGR delete and a cold air intake. I was looking at this thread to gain some info on what programmer to run and it looks like the sct custom is the way to go. The only thing I have to add is as said, Change the oil early and often along with the fuel filter every 8-10k. Thing has been a money pit but hopefully I have polished the turd to the point it will be a reliable solid engine now.

I change my oil every 5000 with mobile one synthetic its about 25 bucks a gallon but its cheap insurance when the 6.0 is touchy on oil I do fuel filters at 10,000 miles ONLY USE FORD FILTERS that's what was beaten into my head after hours and hours on powerstroke forum

I would run a stock oil cooler and an aftermarket egr cooler. Not a big fan of the bulletproof oil cooler. That cooler was designed to cool oil on a supercharger for a mustang, not 15 quarts on a powerstroke. A nice hot day in traffic would not be to pleasant. Rev x is amazing. I have 3 6.0s and love them. 6.7s are awsome though. I tow my drag truck (6.0) to races with one and the power is stupid.
