It seems that there is a higher risk of avalanches this winter because of the how the snow setup. I have a beacon and probe but have been thinking about a Avy bag as of recently. I don't have an extra $1200 sitting around and would just throw it on a credit card. I don't want to do this as I am trying to clear up any/all debt int he next two years... but what good is that if you're dead. I live in the midwest and only get to ride out west 2-3 times a year so the need is a lot less for me compared to the lucky SOBs that live out west. You really can't put a dollar value on your life and something keeps telling me to just buy a bag on the card. I am not aware of places that rent the bags so buying one is pretty much my only option. Has anyone else been in this same dilemma and what did you do? $1200 for a bag that I'll only wear 10 days a year is hard to swallow. I know the bag isn't 100% guaranteed to save a life... but a 98% success ratio is very good. Meadows are fun to carve up but get boring after a while. I know someone will say to just stay off the slopes that are unsafe but I'll still worry about the ones that 'look' safe.
