abs pack, beacon, or both?

Let me decide if I want to use gas...oil.....or both first....

and then I'll get back to you on that one!

:beer;

IMO, riding w/o a beacon is irresponsible in this day and age. It is there to possibly save your life or that of a total stranger. A few years ago I came across a group who had triggered an avy and they had NO avy gear, needless to say, he died. We had beacons, probes and shovels, but w/o him having a beacon, we never found the guy. His wife was there to see it all.

If you have the extra coin, I'd also highly recommend getting an avy pack also, but a beacon is a must.

That's the way I used to go....till I figured out how many people that have one couldn't use one efficiently if "MY" life depended on it!

Exactly.. Like skibreeze said... EVERYBODY should have a beacon... I would also like to add.. I think that EVERYBODY needs to take at least one avalanche safety class too.. and EVERYBODY should learn to use their beacons and do beacon checks throughout the day.. easy enough to do when parked have a snack..

BOTH....I also bring along 2 extra beacons in case anybody I ride with doesnt have one........

Great idea in theory....but if they don't already have one there's an even better chance they don't know how to use it. You'll be able to find them, but who's gonna find you? Probably one of the reasons you go with the pack too, huh? There is no substitute for education.

actually I ask if they know how to use one..if they dont...I give them a quicky little course..not near as good as having a pro course..but at least they have the basics..and normally there is enough along that a few of us are well trained....

That's great to hear! Much easier to do that with digital beacons these days. I don't miss doing grid searches one bit! In our group I just adjust where we're gonna go that day. If I have uneducated riders with me I just totally avoid the good stuff, and encourage them to get educated and equipped if they want to go to the places I show them pictures of. It actually works quite well to get them motivated! If not, I just don't invite them on the bluebird days.

Yep I wouldn't even think of riding without a beacon. The best way to make sure people know how to use the beacon and are aware is take an avalanche course with your riding group, so your ALL on the same page. ABS packs are good for sure, but far from a must like a beacon. I have no intention of buying one anytime soon. Using a beacon for a single search is pretty straitforward, but a multiple one, most people would be in huge trouble.

Also, riding with people you just met= big mistake. I did it once last year and I will NEVER do it again, the ONLY way I would consider it again is if I was with atleast a few that I know well enough to trust. It was minutes away from being a massive search and rescue. Granted I was out of harms way(I seen it was bad, and went out of the way and watched), but I still didn't like seeing 10 guys on a bad hill at once, that slid down VERY soon after leaving.....the picture is still very clear.

Beacon + ABS PLUS other riders with Beacons, Shovels, Probes AND the training to know how to use them to save your butt!

Come on..............

Both Dammit!

The ABS pack gives you a chance to save your own life...............................the beacon allows your friends and family to save your life!

If the chips fall............don't you want both opportunities?!?!?!?

It all adds expense to an already very expensive sport, but in this day and age where sleds are making "People better riders", (I may disagree to some extent but that is a different thread) we as backcountry enthusiasts need to be responsible for how and where we ride. With that being said, BOTH expensive pieces of equipment don't do $HIT without training and practice (beacon especially).

Get the equipment........have the resolve to get the training, practice with your buddies....and maybe come November thru March we all read fewer sad, tragically unnecessary posts!

Oh yeah, RIDE WITHIN YOUR MEANS!

Rant over.............. just love my snowmobiling brotheren!

Regards,

Quinton
