A little input please

I am going to be 36 in August. I would love to go to a tech school and pick up another degree in 2 years. going to a 4 year school isn't an option and most likely a 41 rookie teacher would never get hired.

I have great training, very good experience and have been doing very well for the last decade, then the recession hits and decimates the industry in the area that I live in.

Was actually thinking of EMT training or something. I am looking for some serious suggestions. There seem to be a lot of well off and safe people in Snowest so I thought that somebody might be able to offer some GOOD advice.
We would move but there are only a couple places that I would move to in Colorado. Besides, we can't sell our house, the market is toast. No way I could sell it for what it is worth.

Show an interest. Sign up as a substitute teacher, see how you like it. My dad did this for several years for science/math classes. If they district likes you and they see you're willing to learn, see what it'd take to become part-time or even full-time if its available.

dude, as much as you medical is a good field in General, EMT's and Paramedics don't make squat for what they have to know.

My cousin went back to school in his late 30's early 40's to be an X-ray tech (same as X-rated if i remember right). Loves it, makes good money, moved from MN to Co springs. ect. Grants paid for about 90% of his education. he was in a similar situation as you. Displaced worker, middle aged, 2 kids ect. Just gotta bite the bullet.

Whoever said green jobs earlier hit the nail on the head. Billions of stimulus dollars are going into the "renewable energy" sector for projects that will take decades to mature and will require support all the way from planning and construction all the way to long term maintenance.

I am in the utility industry and nobody will ever stop using electricity. Having said that conservation is becoming a big item in our industry as well.

I have worked in the food industry since I was 15, started milking cows all through High School. After High School I worked in a meat dept for 6 years and now I deliver bread for Sara Lee which surprisingly is a great job with good benefits and pays the bad habit of snowmobiling and hunting mule deer. People will always need to eat, and they eat out less in an economy like this, just an idea for ya.

That idiot president of ours is going to need a lot of tax collectors pretty soon:mad:
x2 on the x-ray tech, have a buddy that did the same and says he has job options wherever he wants to go.

maybe a place to check-out

One of my best friends is a project engineer for TIC (The Industrial Company). From what I understand they do alot of thier work on energy projects, and are based out of Steamboat, CO and Casper, Wy. I would think that with your current skills, training and experience you would be a canidate for potential job openings. I know you don't think you could sell your home with the market the way it is. But it may be a place to find employment within the CO/WY region. Just an idea of a place that might have some opportunities.

Medicine is also a great field as the elderly population continues to grow and there will always be people with health conditions needing care. There are alot of 2 year tech degrees that can produce decent pay. I would also considser a 4 year degree. When I went to school for my OT degree there were a couple women in there 30's and 40's in the program as well as one in her 50's. So don't be afraid to commit just make sure its somthing you enjoy. Good luck!

will see how it works out.

They estimate that for every renewabel energy Job created two will be lost from existing energy sources. Most of the money put in will go to government programs.

hardass is correct, hospitals, etc are laying off workers...however the last to be affected are those who have direct patient care and are needed in the medical process. A receptionist is going long before a nurse, et.

As for the EMT, yeah it would be hella fun but the pay isn't that great.

Myself I am an x-ray tech(I know you all figured with my name I was a **** star). Schooling was 2 solid years, no summers off. 9 months of generals and the rest intensive xray schooling.

I'm 5 years out of school and I make around 27 an hour. Not great money, but not bad. I know I could make more in the trades, etc. hell lots of guys on here do. But this part for me is the kicker(and I worked as a carpenter before). I know I will get 26 paychecks a year, I know very close to what each will be(can make changes). Having that security of knowing I get paid every two weeks is huge for me. NOT having to have a good year of weather, etc to make my money. Plus I get good(used to be great) insurance, and when I started I had almost a month of vacation.

Now about varying the paycheck. I can take call and get call pay and OT. I can work 2nd or 3rd shift and get differental. Personally I love working 3rd shift because I get more time with my kids and I avoid supervisors.

I do work at a hosptial and clinic. The up side to hospital is you get more fun stuff, ie Bloody Traumas....more like what you can get if you wanted EMT. I love broken bones, etc and the challenges that traumas bring.

The upside to a clinic is that you are working M-F 8-5, etc. No weekends or holidays like hospital work. BUt me I would find that boring, although someday I will lean towards that.

Another option for medical workers is Traveling or temp jobs. Many places will hire folks to cover maternity leave, etc. The down side for workers is you may only be in a spot for 6 weeks. BUT the hiring place will generally pay very well per hour since they don't have benefits. You can find agencies that will help find work and negotiate mileage, cars, housing etc.

In fact when my kids leave the house the plan is kinda for the wife and I to look into this option as a way to travel and make some bank. Course that depends on being able to retire with good benis from my current job after 30 years. That puts me around 50 since I went to school right after high school.

So all in all there are jobs out there that will pay more, etc. Yeah my dirt bike is older(2003) and my sled is a 99 Gen II, but you also don't see me trying to unload a 25k dollar turbo sled for 15k in order to keep paying bills and live while I wait for people to need jobs done.

Interesting comment. While I agree a substantial amount of the money will go into the government, always does, I can't understand how projects that expand and create a new type of energy infrastructure that must be built, integrated and subsequently maintained could take jobs out of the sector. As much as the politicians want to eliminate the traditional generation sources of coal and natural gas the general public will never tolerate the variability of most renewable resources demanding the firm capabilities of coal and natural gas continue to be utilized.

On top of all that, even though the stimulus I mentioned earlier is a psuedo one time hit, several states have already passed progressive renewable portfolio standards (RPS) laws that require an increasing percentage of renewables leaving the consumer to foot the bill for these mandates. The feds are also working on this type of law, simply Google energy legislation and read until you die of boredom:face-icon-small-dis

I'm thinking nursing. You'd probably look good in one of those naughty nurse outfits with some six inch heels!! BWAHAAHAAAHAAAHAA!!!! Sorry PJ couldn't resist.
