Given our current situation here in America I am contemplating going back to school and getting a degree in a more recession proof career. Right now I am laid off from the Land Surveying occupation/Computer Aided Drafting and Design. My main problem is that I have no idea what careers would be recession proof. The real estate and construction industry is toast and land surveying is directly tied to those. Hence, layoffs!:mad:

I know that given my age that I could qualify for a bunch of grants out there designed to help people in my situation learn something new and get back into the workforce.

I am asking my fellow sledders what they believe to be a "Recession Proof Career". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no recession proof career, only a recession proof attitude! Adaptability is the only way to live during the good time or the bad....self employed is the only way to go...

become a man whore.... all the ladies are stressed out because they lost their jobs....they will come lookin for a stress relief and be willing to pay for it! lol

medical my man.....if nothing else you can be paid to surf snowest like me.

Heres a few

Undertaker / mayor / rock star / actor / famous anybody / plumber / electrician / guy on tv who sells the shamwows (vince) or a colony leader.

Plumbers are all loaded and drive big vans full of money and turbo their M8s.

I don't think there's a list of "recession-resistant" jobs, but there's certain things populations cannot live without. Medical is one of them. Transportation is another. Communications and emergency services are other possibilities.

Being that most manufacturing is being outsourced to cheaper countries (We use china and mexico where I work), incoming quality inspection is a pretty big part of our mfg line. With your mechanical skills you might be able to market yourself that way and find stable employment. I did non-destructive testing for many years and there will always be someone that needs those services.

With all seriousness..... "green jobs". I hate that label, but renewable energy is the face of the future, love it or hate it. There are serious gaps in the industry for solar, geothermal, and wind techs. Great money to be had in each industry.

Couldn't have said it better Mule.

PJ, I told you about the jobs that I thought were recession proof back when you were looking for work last summer/fall. But, with the way it looks like it will be going with natural resources, I think I was wrong.

With recession I would have to believe people are drinking more and helping out your company. :D

Open a bar,, people drink when they are sad and party when they are happy.:beer;:beer;:beer;

I believe that in the future plumbers will make more money than computer programmers because you can't offshore plumbing. Think jobs that have to have a person present...even legal and accounting, traditionally recession proof jobs, are going to be largely outsourced in the future.

Carpenter, dentist, plumber, electrician, etc...
