96 670 Recoil rebuilding for "dummies"? HELP

OK so a buddy put a new rope in the darn thing and I started the sled about 6 times and the rope stayed in my hand...I pulled it off and checked it out and don't know what I'm looking at...I remember my dad always telling me that recoils are a pain in the butt to work on and I don't exactly have the patience for small parts and springs...Anyone got pics or a diagram or with tips on how I can do this without freaking out...? Please let me know...
I can get it to retract back in no problem but it doesn't bite or catch when pulling it over. Did something fall out? I tried lining it up on the notches and exactly like it came off...no joy. PLEASE ADVISE

parts slid off the top of the shaft.

tap hole, install bolt and washers/spacers to hold the parts on the shaft.

then, install e-start and hope u don't have to pull the rope again..

best advice and option i've found for the pos doo recoils.

EDIT: oops, sorry just noticed this was for a 96 670, i know those recoils are different, by how much, i'm not sure.

recoil

if it is anything like the 99 summit x the centers always crack and dont work right. you may be able to weld the center back in if thats the problem.the insides are pretty simple with a cam on the inside to engage into the motor, you may even have to clean because of the dustand dirt.to recoil it the best way i have found is to turn the recoil until it has enough turns on it to pull in all the rope and put vise grips on the rope to hold and reinstall.

Buy a new recoil, DO NOT REBUILD IT you will guarentee yourself problems with just a re-build. Order a new assembly or call Big John and he will get you set up right. AFTER you have the new one in, ALWAYS engage the rope (pull it out just enough to grab) before you yank on it, it will save you a million headaches.

Do what Sturgis Sledder said. Buy new parts. If its not catching then it is the cam inside that has a small tit on it, when the cord is pulled it spins around and catches on the tit, then pushes the arm out and catches on the inside of the stepped hub that is attached to the magneto on the motor (the gold looking piece). The cams are cheap, just order a new one. if the rope goes back in ok, then the recoil is fine. Once the new part comes in, hold the starter in one hand, and clamp the rope housing with your thumb or vise grips so that it doesn't come flying out, then take off the circlip and washer, slip out old cam and slip on new one, put circlip and washer back on and re-install on sled.

Like Sturgis said, make sure that it engages the magneto hub by pulling it a little bit before pulling the motor over. Just snapping it out will break the little tit off. You can find a parts schematic at Ski Doo.com

I agree, I replaced every frigging part there is in it and it still fawked up. ended up buying a whole new assembly, only way to do it!
