950 straightline twin 06 rev????? Good or bad

950

I worked on one a couple years ago. Good luck with getting it running like what they say. From my experience it wasnt anything near what they said. My 07 with twin pipes and a head would spank it like it wasnt there. just my 2 cents

first problems

From day one with the motor there was alway alittle antifreeze missing. after three years and two different owner i finally got it and trying to find the problem. After many head gaskets i found that the head bolts slots that are machined out in the domes where machined out way to much. Every time you put the dome on the o ring was showing at every head bolt. So leaking antifreeze right into the motor. I still ran with a moddified 800 HO motor. So now that i have that issue figured out i hope I can figure out the jetting and start getting the power to the snow.. Any help with jetting or clutching

There is a guy on here named Joe Gasvoda who has run that engine, shout him up using the search.

950

Joes was the one I worked on. We never could get it to run the way they said it would. The straightline guys even came out to west and worked on it and it just never ran the way they said it would.

I have seen one of these. Lackluster to say the least. Lots of work and clutches and on and on...... ran like a stocker, only it was really loud and would be out of gas in about 40 miles. Theres better ways of throwing that much money away.

I second on it being out of gas in a hurry. Had to carry 10 gallons extra to ride half as much. Sorry I was just really unimpressed with that engine. I have built a lot of mod sleds and that would never be an engingine choice for me. Stockers will beat it!

Put new domes in tonight!!! Runs great

Finally got the correct domes put on today. No tleaking antifreeze into the motor any more. Needs alittle clutching work but seems to run very well. When the motor was running with blown head gaskets it would hold its own against a slightly moded 800. Plus everyone needs to know that i bought the sled already built with a 162 x 2.5 track boss seat, titanium front end, the 950 motor avenger III gauges, and after new pistons, bumpers and a few other parts I have 4500.00 into everything. the sled has 1100 total miles, 300 on the 950.

This wekend will be the test to see how it runs in the two feet off fresh snow

I'd say you made out pretty good for that price. Hope you get it figured out. Definately worth spending some time figuring it out to make it run.

seen one at revy last year... it ran like poop. seemed like alot of tweaking. which isnt surprising for a BB.

glad your BB is running good!! post some results :)

950 Twins first run

We went up sixmile and headed south, along with about 30 other people. The most I have seen since they closed down soup. Anyways, Ran excellent all day, we removed the thermostat to help it run cooler, and it did. only running about 95 f on the water temp. The jetting was alittle rich at the truck and keep getting richer the higher we went. My egts were only pulling 1050 on a long pull. going to drop three jet sizes. The secondary is lacking for the motor. Just a stock secondary with a dina mo joes kit for a RK tech827. Works well, just not like a team.
It ran very well. pulled on the hills hard. It ran like a 950 with pipes and porting. pulls harder than a 800. but you cant compare 800 cc to 950cc. I am very happy with the motor a few mods and it will run like a animal. Gas consumption was maybe a little more than the 800, but not bad, everyone came out on fumes.

Dialed in!!!!

Went out today, awesome sun, horrible snow. Jetted down and changed the gearing. Ran great, this thing is a monster. Pulls super hard all the time. Uses alittle more fuel than a stocker. I love it alot. It is a hill climbing machine.

17.5 pilot (stock) center clip on needle (stock) 410 mains, leave truck at about 3500' and ride around 5500'-6000'. Pilot is still just a fuzz on the rich side things not bad though. Holmans right though this thing flat hauls the mail, I've got an awesome running ported 800 and our other friend has a great running RKT 827 and we can't even line poach up to where he's at on the hill.

another awesome day in the flathead on the 950

Went six mile north and the snow was great once you got back in there. The motor is running awesome. Finally got some temp out of my egt s the pro side is still a little rich and need to.drop the pilot down to 16. Rode with a m 1000 with tons.of work and I could blow right past him on a hill. You really need to see it in action to realize how.well it truly works. And it is.the loudest thing on the moutain. At least you never lose your group cause they can hear you for two miles. Love the new sled. The only problem is it uses more fuel than.a sticker.

How's that 950 running? I'm running the same elevation w/440 mains at 900 deg wide open & the plugs are burning golden right down to the base but it feels & sounds rich. It's not blubbery, just kinda blaa. I'm afraid to lean it out with the plugs looking as lean as they are. Does the modified ignition cause the plugs to look leaner than it really is? I'm running 07 needles in the 2nd clip shimmed .020 & the plugs look the same in the midrange as wide open but at 1125 deg. I really think the mains need to be leaner but I'm gunshy, I don't want to toast another motor. Did yours survive with the 410's?

BBP - what plugs, oil and fuel are you running? I know it's damn near impossible, but piston wash is your back-up telltale to help you read the plugs and what your mtoor is doing.
When I first switched to GP7(Torco oil) it screwed with my mind a few times thinking one thing and seeing another. Caught me offgaurd until I changed my thinking. Colors and wash changed quite a bit, but once that baseline was learned......no issues now. Good Luck, I for one cannot help you out whatsoever with that big twin.

BBP- What elevation are you riding at? Holmans 950 is still rich in the midrange so we are going up to 420 mains and dropping the needle to the 2nd clip w/ shims as well. I'm sure we'll end up back at the 410's just trying to be on the safe side of things. To get the egt temps we were looking for plugs were cardboard brown at the top of a long pull w/ 410's
