900 won't fire up!

*SOLVED* 900 won't fire up!

yesterday was my first time driving the 900. Just driving around town towing a buddy on a GT racer. Had about 15 minutes of good times before the sled bogged down and stalled out.

Now it won't even attempt to fire, it turns over but no hint of starting up.

Guru's, where do i start!?

pull plug, check compression, pull head, cylinder, replace pistons with 06 pistons, reassemble cross fingers and hope bottom end not toast.

i really hope thats not the case but its happened before.

it has the 06' piston update and about 15 hours on a rebuilt engine.

we did change the fuel tank (last recall to be completed) i'm wondering if maybe the pick-up isn't working? i'm totally selling this thing when it's fixed. I can't afford this crap and i'm not mechanically inclined enough. I'm ok with suspension and things like that, but motor stuff, it's like french to me. Back to snowboarding, worst case, i break a binding strap and pay $15.

I'd start by checking spark/compression/fue pressure. Based on what you described and the fact that the engine is a fresh rebuild; I'd suspect the stator but you really haven't provided much info....

We need more info...

How much fuel is in it?
Check wiring for a short.
Check for spark, replace plugs.
Wiggle throttle lever, try disconnecting throttle safety switch, ignition switch and kill switch - the sled will run with all these disconnected.

What have you already tried?

Tonight I:

-put more fuel in it
-disconnected all the switches

still nothing,

tomorrow sometime i'll change the plugs and check for spark.

thanks for your help.

Should the dash lights illuminate at all when pulling the cord, even if it doesn't fire up?

Don't think so. There is a relay that prevents them from being powered until the sled is running.

Correct... the chassis power relay does not engage until the sled hits somewhere around 900 RPM when the stator is kicking out enough energy to power everything. Below that, everything that is being produced is funneled directly into the engine's electrical system to get the sled running

What happened to me once when I pulled the gas tank, was the engine started to bog down and I stopped before it died. Changed spark plugs and that did not help. Opened up the gas cap and I could feel the tank start to swell. One of the vent lines was kinked. Maybe check that out.

Thank you, i'll take a look at that. gotta find those vent lines...

another problem i have is that I don't have a garage and it's been snowing 20cm a day here for the last week, very hard to get stuff done out there... very hard to get motivated anyway.

thanks for all the help guys.

The snow doesn't make you want to go out and get your sled fixed to ride it?

changed plugs, getting spark.

what is the processes for troubleshooting no fuel?

no kink in the vent line. why is the vent line so long and wrap around so much?

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

Has the fuel tank update been done?

Is the fuel pump plugged in?

I would start by checking the fuel pressure...if you don't have a gauge, you can see if you at least have pressure by pulling it over a few times and then pushing on the valve where you put the gauge...fuel should come out so watch your eyes/face. Just because you have pressure doesn't mean that you have the right pressure.

run 12 volts to your fuel pump like you are priming the system and see if you can hear the pump run, if it is running then check to see if you have any pressure.

new tank and filter over the summer.
is it possible something on the inside of the tank came loose?

everything on the outside of the tank seems normal, all connections look good.

absolutely no fuel comes out of where you would hook up a pressure test gauge.

How cold was it outside when it died. Are you working on it in a heated garage or out in the cold? If sled is outside but was inside before it died. Try added half a bottle of isoheet to the tank and parking it in a heated garage overnight.
