670 Recoil PIA!

I'm trying to help my buddy with his old 97 670 summit, the recoil will not stop breaking. We have replaced it three times with various used 670 recoils but they will not stop breaking. I believe its because of a cheap plastic piece that connects it to the engine, the high compresion just snaps it.
The local shop said its just a problem everyone has with these, I'm thinking that there has to be a fix out there though.
Any help is appreciated:beer;

Yes they are a cheap piece of junk but to break that many you must have something wrong with the spool on the end of the crank or you are tugging hard on it before it locks on. That little plastic pawl can be bought seperate and replace just that piece. I see the new ones have a green pawl instead of the red. Maybe it is supposed to be stronger. Red plastics seem to get more brittle than other colors.

We must be tugging hard before it locks on, yes that redplastic piece is the POS that keeps breaking but I didnt know they sold those seperate. Anyone know a place to buy the green piece?

do you still have the old metal recoil are have you updated to the plastic model.

Still have three sets of the stock recoil with a metal casing and plastic inards if that is what you mean. Didn't know they had an update we have just been buying used stock ones from snowmobile salvage.

You need to update to the newer all plastic recoil, I think it came out in 99 are 2000 to use the new recoil you have to have a new metal ring that mounts on crank case ask your dealer they should have a kit if its still available.

From the old forum

OK....

Theres 2 ways to keep a doo recoil in fine working order...

1) with a NEW recoil.....always engage the dog into the cup BEFORE pulling like a mad man....

2) with an old recoil that still works....see #1

FYI- just grabbing the handle and pulling aggressivly everytime = recoil failure

I have had 1 failure in 3 years....I know they suck...but a little common sense goes a long way..IMHO-BJ

BTW- as gay as this sounds....you cant really fix a broken one...hence the "toss in garbage and buy a new one" recomendation....BELIEVE ME...I've tried....LOL
