6.0 Question

My wife was driving my Powerstroke home when it just lost all power but wanted to rev up. I drove it that night and rodded the sh!t out of it and it ran just fine. Then my brother-in-law offered to take it to school (he's in the second year of a diesel tech program at the local tech school). It acted up on him as well. No turbo boost and minimal power. But it stopped doing it by the time he got to town. It didn't set off any codes for him. So I started simple with a new air filter. It hasn't acted up on my wife or me since and it's got about 400 miles since the new air filter. Any idea's on what's going on? It never did it to me but a new air filter seems like way to easy of a fix. Thanks for any feedback, boys! Cheers!!!

It sure can be that simple. When the filter is restricted, and you have a VVT turbo, there is a compound problem. The ECM calls for X amount of boost, and the turbo does all it can to produce that boost, but if the airflow isnt there then it just spins the hell out of the compressor and superheats the air. So now you have low airflow and supeheated intake air. The reason this comes and goes is that the ambient temp can still be low enough to keep the ECM from pulling fuel to prevent engine damage. Run the truck a while and see how it does. If it doesnt do it again, id say that was the problem.

I would just get rid of the EGR all together the engine is much happier that way!! It could also be the vanes of the turbo sticking that is common with VGT turbos.
