I haven't tossed Hesse any crap for a while so I figured he was due....
I've got an '02 3500 8.1 crew, dually with the Allison, and like Beels, I love it! avg around 11 all yr round, and my old mans '03 2500HD w/ the 6.0 and 4.10's gets 12, by the way, he drives his age(not too speedy) 
I'll take the power and towability of my truck over his all day long. he actually makes me tow his 21' boat to & from our cabin, instead of using his. he said, "yours pulls it better".

I have a 02' chevy 1500HD crewcab with the 6.0, and I only get 13-14 empty on longer trips, closer to 12-13 avg. Pulling an aluminum 2 place, 8-9 mph. I get 10mpg with it in the summer pulling the boat. Jesse.
My pa in law has a 2002 gmc 2500 with the 8.1 and allison tranny. He gets about 10 around town and 14 on the highway. When he tows the two place enclosed he gets about 8 to 10. Drives heavy on the pedals though. My buddy has a Yukon Denali w\ the 6.0 and he gets about 16 on the freeway and about 10 towing his malibu wakesetter (about 6000 lbs).

Took my buddy's 05 or 06 I can't remember what it is, GMS HD2500 with 4:10 up to mille lacs yesterday. A 3 place sled bed aluminum trailer with 2 Honda rubicons on the trailer and an ice shack in the box.

Took mine out Sat, pulling my 27' enclosed that is built like a tank, with 3 sleds in it, got 8. There was about 3000 feet in elevation gain and had to pull the last 10 miles in 4wd and 3" of snow. Could have used a little more power but it did fine, and like I said before, for the amount of pulling I do it gets the job done. The 8.1 is a great engine, but a couple miles a gallon add up on a daily driver and if I were looking to upgrade from my 6.0 I'd get a duramax. my $.02
