50 Miles into my 08 Xp Everest, questions for you guys

Chose to buy the holdover 08 this year. Got to 50 miles today! So far everything is good.

I rode 35 miles mostly break in, totally stock. Noticed that regardless of where we road the clutches got HOT! Too hot to touch bare handed.

Since then, I stripped out all of the foam, took out the plastic BS, added XXXmod vents and an HPS can.

Today was my first day out since. Can sounds awesome! Checked the clutches periodically and could touch them bare handed for 10 seconds or so (seems to be an improvement!) Belt looks great!

I am wondering from some of you clutch guru's about the characteristics that I am seeing. First off, I am feeling somewhat of a mushy engagement.

I also feel like when I am cruising around part throttle that there is no connection between thumb and track. Is this belt slippage? The only time I feel like I have good engagement is when I open 'er up.

I am pulling 7600-7800 rpms on hardpack and 8200 rpms in the fresh snow on clicker 1 (climbing at 8500'). On the trail it'll pull 7900 rpm.

With all of this said, I am more inclined to find a setup that is 'good enough' and roll with it. Don't want to be changing clickers and tinkering too much on hill. Are these 'mushy' characteristics the same problem everyone has seemed to have a problem with?

As it is, the XP is hands down the most impressive machine I've ever ridden, can't imagine what it would be like if it could get MORE power to the ground.

Let me know what you guys think.

There is much reading on there but I will post to help you out. You need to go to a stiffer secondary spring as the stock one lets the belt slip. A common one everyone is using is the EPI yellow.

The no load on the motor on the bottom you are descirbing is due to the ramps that are in it. They have a very slow shift on the bottom and basically the sled is stuck in first gear till you hammer it wide open. I am still experimenting with ramps and have no used the ones I put in so I am not sure if it fixed it. PM Winter Brew I think he has a very good clutch kit for the 08 that resolves the issue. I tried a softer primary spring last year with no help. THe ramps just need to go away.

I am not sure what type of riding you do but we ride the Coquihalla and it is fairly steep and deep. Sometimes lots of powder and sometimes a little powder very little hard pack and no trails. The elevation is about 4000' to 5500'.

We have done several changes that include:

Dynamo Joe clutch kit
20 drive gear, tried the 19 tooth and lost too much track speed for our liking
Quick clickers
MBRP silencer
SLP air intake for XP
new belt from Doo

We always start off with Clicker #3 and would never consider #1. Remember the Tachs are reading at least 200 rpm low so you want to top out at 8400 on the tach.

The stock clutching sucks and yes it creates lots of heat.

Later....

i spent the money on a team secondary kit! no more problems.its a lot of money over $600. but how mutch are you going to spend on all that other stuff ramps ,heilix, springs,belts ride time!

This was the most debated topic last year, lots of info out there if you look for it. Here are some of the better threads;

Bottom line is wait to doo any clutching until you get past the breakin chip, your sled will wake up somewhere around 90-100 miles, then OH WOW!

The things that are MUST Doo are;
  • Follow the break in things I posted in my "Have Faith" thread
  • 20 Tooth gear (on 154's)
  • HPS Can - (you already did)
  • Venting (you did)
  • 44/33 Helix - (Contact Big John, he has them in stock)
  • Leave the 12mm pins in the priamry, leave the stock primary spring (160/320), & make sure you have the roller updates from your dealer.
Then, once broke in, add pin weight for your weight & riding elevation (What are they?).

Thanks for the info, I have spent a bit of time reading, as I will continue to do, but mostly I just wanted to confirm that what I was feeling was the same as what everyone else has been talking about.

I am 200 lbs. geared up with my pack, and ride between 8000' and 11,000'.

IdahoSlim, do you recommend Big Johns helix over something like the DJ clutch kit? Also, will the 20 tooth gear fit with the stock chain or will that need changed?

Thanks again for any and all help.
