4 place enclosed towing with 5.3 vortec?

I had a 08 GMC Max (6.0), i bought a 22+5 inline trailer... Needless to say i sold the truck, and bought a diesel. Empty around here in Dickinson,ND, i be lucky if i got 10 mpg. Last year headed to Cooke city, (our usual riding area) we averaged 7-9 with an open 3 place trailer. So i figured i was only gonna get 6 if i was lucky loaded round trip with the enclosed. I'm hoping to get anywhere between 12-16 with the diesel, i'll keep updated as soon as the snow flys!!!!

i never pulled an open 4 place with my toyota, but i pulled a 24' enclosed to cooke (from just east of you, by beulah, to cooke). i drove a few mph over speed limit the whole way and got anywhere from 8-11 mpg per tank. it averaged out to be right around 10 mpg overall.

i hope your new diesel isnt a dodge, because you will be greatly disappointed in your mileage. i traded my toyota for a 2012 cummins last march. right after that i pulled a 20' open with 5 sleds (one in the bed of the pickup) to the big horns. i averaged 11 with it running around 80-83 mph the whole way. now it has around 6000 on it, most of which i accumulated pulling the camper over this summer.....and it has not improved much, if at all.

I don't think an in-line pulls any harder than an open 2 place.

I've never pulled a 7' wide.

I wouldn't doubt it though as wind and aerodynamics play a big factor.

The 5.7 Tundra blows the doors off the 5.3 or older 6.0.

I have not ridden in a newer 6 speed 6.0.

I think the Tundra feels a little torquier then the 6.2 Chevy. I'd be interested to see how those compare. I've spent quite a bit of time in the 6.2s (Escalade EXT and Chevy 1/2 ton). They pull pretty good but definitely like to shift and keep the RPM up (at least pulling a 4 place enclosed).

same with the tundra pulling a 24' enclosed. it has a 6 speed, it would not pull in 6th, 5th only if it was flat (and i mean flat), ever little incline it was in 4th. half the trip i manually forced it into 4th so it couldnt shift up otherwise it would shift constantly

If I were buying another 1/2 ton to pull, I think I'd consider the Nissan Titan. They look good, and they have more power than the Toyota also. I'm a GM guys, and love the new Chevy's though.

I think it would come down to the Ecoboost, the new Chev with the 6.2, and the Titan. JMO! What ever I could get the best deal on would play a big factor in that purchase.

I test drove the Tundra before I got my 09 Silverado. I was not impressed at all. I used to run a Caterpillar D9 dozer that had a smother ride and probably better handling than the Tundra. Felt like it was lost on the road. I would always stick with a Chevy or a Ford. Companies who know what they are doing when it comes to building a truck. The new Silverado's come with a 6 speed and 3.42 rear. But the way they have geared the tranny it acts like a 4.10 on the low end and an old 3.42 on the high end. Best of both worlds. Haven't been in the new Eco's but have heard really good things about them. But the EPA and actual MPG is any better then the GM 5.3's so it is just preference.

I have the 5.3L in my 04 Tahoe and no way would I want to pull a 4 place enclosed with that. It already pisses me off in the hills looking for gears. Only way to pull is rollin coal in a diesel. That's my next rig.

I bought the lightest 4 place enclosed I could find about 10 years ago (triton). I gave it a shot with a 5.3 for one season and bought a new truck that next fall (diesel). The big thing besides the power is the stability and brakes on the HD trucks. Pulling my trailer in windy conditions with a half ton was a lot more stressful than the HD IMO.

EDiT - "Super Sled" you can KMA (he marked this post as not helpful). I am only stating my experience and stated that IT WAS MY OPINION, that is what IMO stands for......
