4 place enclosed towing with 5.3 vortec?

i would highly not recommened it. It will struggle trying to maintain speed, it will be blown all over the road if you get into wind or pass a semi, the brakes are very inadequate... but if you do decide to do it, make friends with a good transmission guy! the 4l60 isnt known for withstanding much abuse...

IMO, any of the new small blocks, Ford, Dodge or Chevy, need to be mated to 6 speed transmissions because of how the power bands on these motors are.....

That is a big safety issue with me when I'm pulling even a moderately sized trailer on a GM 5.3 or 6.0 with a 4 speed, you'll be in 4th gear, then all of a sudden the thing drops into 2nd and breaks traction and sends you peeling out all over the highway at 50 mph ..... That right there is why I said no way on another small block when i bought my last truck.....the big block is a lot better in that respect, a diesel is better yet.

i totally agree with what you are saying

I had a 5.3 and the truck is too soft in the springs. The brakes are too small. The motor is a good motor but the weak spot is that tranny. Very clunky compared to today's 6 speeds. I wouldn't do it. Get a 3/4 ton.

The 5.3l has a 6-speed now.

4.10 gear ratio and I think it would pull it. What gears are in the OP vehicle?

5.3

I have the 5.3L with the 6 speed and it pulls my 4 place enclosed over the Rocky's just fine. The 6 speed made a huge difference. My father-in-law as the 08 with the 4 speed and he is always at red-line to keep his speed. I don't have any sway issues or feel like I am being pushed down the mountain. Just get a good brake controller and you will be just fine!

I had an 04 GMC 5.3 extended cab w/3/73s.

I towed a 3 place enclosed with it and it worked it hard.

Lots of 2nd gear and lots of 4000-5500 RPM.

An aluminum 2 place open is a lot better with that truck:)

My buddy has an 09 with the 6 speed and that seems to work a lot better. Just as much or more shifting but less RPM.

It will pull it, it just isn't fast and it isn't easy on the truck. The tranny is definitely the weak point. I would expect to put a tranny in it if your towing a lot. My buddy makes a lot of money rebuilding 4L60s.

if you want a half ton gasser to pull...........go buy a toyota or an ecoboost. for a half ton, i love my toyota

What's so funny? I bet that Toyota will outpull any GM with a 5.3... And i own a 5.3 Chev!

Toyota still uses a c channel frame. Not near as rigid. I have drove several and was not impressed. They were not bad, but just nothing special. That kinda how I feel about all of toyota's lineup. Average car. They don't do anything that is the best. They aren't the worst. Just down the middle.
