2015 Ford F-150 (just released)

Why would I choose that diesel motor over the ecoboost?
Having monitored fuel prices in my area the last 8 months (probably worse in california) diesel has averaged $.85 a gallon MORE than gasoline. And I can almost guarantee that with the DEF system the little diesel would only be good for 1 maybe 2 mpg more on highway, and maybe 2-3 more towing.

If I have to pay more upfront for the small diesel, more maintenance and more at the pump how is that helping the people? The small diesel motor is 10 years too late. Would have been the ticket when diesel was $.50 less a gallon than gas.

I used to be a diesel nah sayer until I towed a serious load with my new duramax. If u tow more than 6k lbs, I would say a diesel is worth it's extra cost for its extra tow capacity. Plus they hold their value longer too which should be considered. If I towed just a two or three place, then a ecoboost would be the ticket. For me wanting to tow a 9k camper along with two on the deck, a diesel is the answer for me.

Why do you think that Dodge is rolling one out then?

I'm excited for the "small" canyon coming out with a diesel. Should get 30 mpg highway empty. Be $10k less than a half ton and be able to tow 7500 lbs and have a payload of 1600 lbs.
Perfect for me.

I agree about diesel. It's only for certain people. If you don't tow every day. Or tow a lot it's hard to justify the price. Longevity is a non issue any more. They all last 200k when cared for. How many keep them that long?

Got 17 years out of my previous Ford. Went through 3 engines though.

If the cost of fuel wasn't an issue for daily driving I would be hard pressed to pass up a new F250 diesel.

exactly what I was saying. Cost of diesel no longer justifies owning one unless all you do is pull i heavy camper.

Dodge has the mini diesel coming out because they dont have an answer for the eco-boost with regards to the average weekend warrior. The hemi is a great motor for sports cars.

having owned my fair share of diesels (2 Dmax and 1 jetta TDI) I can say that i wont own another diesel truck unless diesel can cost the same as gas at the pump OR they make a mini diesel that gets 40 mpg+

cheaper to rent hotel rooms than pull a camp trailer anymore... :(

The hemi is a great motor for sports cars? As far as gassers go in the half ton segment. Its king of the hill. Same power as the Ford and Gm 6.2's but better economy. With the new 8 speeds they are amazing. Own one then tell me how bad they are.

None of them are that much better than the next.

GM 6.2: 14 city 20 hwy 17 combined 420 horsepower 460 ft-lbs Uses regular unleaded
Dodge 5.7: 15 city 21 hwy 17 combined 395 horsepower 410 ft-lbs Requires Mid grade
Ford F-150 6.2 12 city 16 highway, 14 combined 411 hp 434 ft-lbs

The Dodge gets a tad more economy but combined it doesn't equate, plus it requires midgrade so it costs more to fillup.

I know you're a Chevy guy but where are you getting that the 6.2 is 420/460? Pretty sure its like 409/420. And the dodge doesn't require mid grade. Its just recommended. Kinda like the ecoboost is recommended premium. How many guys actually run premium though? I don't run mid in my hemi that's for sure. There's a big difference between REQUIRED and recommended. At least post accurate info.

Recommended = required

If they are telling you we recommend you run mid grade, I'd do it. I had a turbo gas motor (VW) and they said the same thing. There was a big difference in fuel economy and performance if I didn't run premium. Sure I could run regular but it sucked.

You can't say motor is producing x-amount of horsepower and gets x-fuel economy unless you are using the fuel they tell you to use.

There is ZERO I posted that was inaccurate. Horsepower numbers for a 2014 GMC Sierra 6.2L :

Select the 6.2 l motor from the pull down.

I apologize on the power numbers. Did they bump them way up for 14?

However i don't agree with you on the recommended vs required. My old 05 s4 required premium. Like it would set of the engine light if it didn't have premium. Not only that but in some places mid grade is cheaper. It used to be here because the 89 had ethanol and the 87 was non.

So you'd be okay with your CEL going off in order to save 10 cents a gallon? Really?

Recommended means we used this fuel to get these power numbers.

GM lists higher power numbers with the 5.3l using E85. But they also show you fuel economy as well, it suffers.

In 2014 GM released ALL NEW motors. The only thing that is the same as the last motor is the displacement. Everything else is brand new.

No I'm not at all ok with my CEL going off. That was my point. My Audi would do that if it didn't have premium. Hence it REQUIRED premium. My ram will run on 87 just fine. No CEL, no nothing. I can maybe feel a difference between 87 & 89 but it could be my imagination too. IMO I get my best mileage on 87. Hence the recommended label.

We're going in circles. Ram says to use midgrade. Why wouldn't you? To save 10 cents a gallon or maybe $2.50 a tank?

Realistically its a marginal expense. Like I said i think my ram does better on 87. Maybe 19-20 instead of 18-19 consistently. So on a full tank i might get my 26 extra miles out of it.
