2011 Eagle Valley Snow Drags IV ***EVENT CANCELLED***

Unfortunately the Holy Cross Powder Hounds have had to cancel the 2011 Eagle Valley Snow Drags event due to poor snow conditions at 4 Eagle Ranch. We would need a minimum two feet of snow to get our cat down to 4 Eagle and be able to groom out the track. A big thanks to volunteers and sponsors as well as the racers that planned to attend. We will give it another shot next year.

There were. We eliminated some classes (mountain and trail class 700 and 900). The people competing in those classes were guys on 600's and 800's anyway. That took 6 classes out (stock, improved and modified for each). We also made races where only two people registered a single elimination race instead of waiting on two guys to come back down the track and race again. All in all we got it to fit into one day. We have to hurry along, but we did it last year. It's too expensive to go with two days. And a lot of guys didn't want to hang around that long if they were from out of town.

Can they change the location next year?

Guys check out the snow on the Grand Mesa and the Thunder Mountain Lodge...it's the mother load for inches in snow...! Check posts...

There are a ton of places that seem like they would work. But unless it is private property, you have to apply for a permit through the forest service. That is not an easy thing to do. Also, we want it in our home area as our club is the host. We use our cat to do the grooming. Normally 4 Eagle Ranch is a great location. Just didn't work out this year.

Drag racing is addicting. Seems silly at first when you can be mountain riding, but it is a blast and is fun to tune your sled for. It will be a good one next year.

Too bad...maybe a higher elevation venue would work better? Reliable snow and run em where people tune them to run.

It is hard to find PRIVATE property/venue at higher elevations that are capable of hosting. You have to be able to get a groomer up there. Public land requires a lot of hoops to jump through. Permits, etc.

Try some of the Ranches a little further North up 131. Theres more snow up there. Can't hurt to try.

We'll probably talk about it in the future. You wouldn't think that setting up for a drag race required much work, but it does. Fencing is required by insurance to keep spectators out. The first year we didn't have a "corral" system for the racers and it was a mess trying to tell guys what to do with their triple stinger pipes going. We have it down to a science now.

Good news though! We are working on another event to replace the snow drags for this year. It will still be Feb. 5th at 4 Eagle Ranch. There isn't enough snow to race (and fill in holes) but we are doing a free snowmobiling fun event. Free snowmobiling and fun on all the rental sleds, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, segways and fun events. We will also be pulling people in rafts behind sleds (key in redneck twang music!). It's a family event to get more people involved in snowmobiling. More info coming soon. We are pushing fast to get this together.

Ever thought about finding a place to put on a hillclimb? That would be more funner.

Like Bushy said, something like that would be a little more in tune with what, how and where we ride, and nobody would have to completely change clutching and fuel maps/jetting.

Yep, we've thought about doing timed hill climbs (because side by side competition is tough to insure). I even talked to forest service people about the idea because most of the terrain is managed by them. Permits can take over a year and in most cases they require an environmental study and review session by the public. Yep, it's that difficult.

Yeah, the USFS is a f*cking joke. Some people can get away with anything, then another guy does the same thing and gets fined 10k.

You might have better luck if you could find some state land for your venue. They seem to be easier to deal with than the FS. Our local club has used the CO state forest near Gould for our Poker Run and had good luck with them. Ah well, better luck next year for you guys. sounds like a great time and props to you for putting in the effort!
