2010 assault engine issues

I took my 2010 assault, with a SLP pipe on it,for my first ride and I'm having a little trouble.Sometimes it hesitates or cuts out just above idle when you gas it(almost like a poorly adjusted throttle safety switch, but it's disconnected). Also one Idiot lights comes on,I think it's the temp light, but not positive on this because it was dark and it is very brief every 5 minutes or so.The guage temp never went above 130 degrees. It has 50 to 1 oil mix for the first tank of gas,and has about 40 miles on it.Anyone suggestions?

Good question. After doing the updates to my 09 Assault, it is doing the same thing as yours. I have 2 friends with Assaults and there having this trouble too. We were told that there is a "break in" chip installed that will burn off after so many hours of riding. I don't know if this is true or not but since theres more than one sled with the issue maybe it is. So in the mean time I'm just trying to put as many miles on as possible to see if it goes away. Got 250 miles on so far and it still cuts out. Good luck!

Get some miles on it if it is brand spanking new. You are running very rich and will likely have fouled plugs. Pull those and clean them off every ride (they should be oily). Also, find out what that light is for sure. If your engine temp is at 130, you are fine.

I have the SAME problem with mine... I have a ultra q can on it so I just thought it was the can (which shouldnt matter). I told my dealer and he told me to keep riding it in hope that it would work itself out. Mine "hicupps" at mid range (around 5000 rpm). Hopefully it's not a major problem.

Assult issues

Mine will not start or even fire. Flooding out. Started hard to unload it from picking it up at dealer after update. Have not tried to start it until today. It simply will not start. Dry plugs, etc. and try it again....nothing...going back Monday.

I put 72 miles at 1100 feet elevation on my '09 RMK 800 w/recommended SLP can and it hiccups at 5000 rpms as well. Bringing it back to the dealer tomorrow. I've owned a handful of new sleds and never had issues with hesitation during the first gas tank full. For what its worth, my sled had the hesitation before the update and now I would say its more noticeable with this update.

Mine has 15 miles on it... I took it out tonight, right after my last post, and something went way wrong. All of the sudden it wouldn't go over 10-15 mph and sounded like sh!t. The check engine light was blinking also. I ended up limping it to my dealer and parked it. I will let you guys no what i find out tomorrow- NOT HAPPY

The REALLY BIG bang

Had my Assault assaulted by the update. Had them add the recommended SLP can as well. First start required seven pulls. Next few less, ocasionallly starting in a couple. Did the recommended several heat/cool cycles with minimal rides. Ran like absolute trash when I tried! Replaced SLP with stock can as it has the O2 bung. Wanted to keep track of A/F during breakin.

This morning getting ready to go for first real ride, I started and let warm up. Didn't run for more than a moinute or two before stalling. HUMPH! Started again, same thing. After the third time, every time resisting the urge to give it throttle, it wouldn't start. Plulled and pulled and......Pulled the plugs. They were dripping wet. (BTW I always run the IX plugs with great success). Replaced with new. First pull it backfired louder and sharper than anything I have ever heard. Best comparison would be a hot loaded 30-06 at nearly 4000 fps!!! Mind all, this was still with the las less than quarter of premix.

Fill with premium. Didn't have any great riding but that kept things moderate. Less than impressed, and down right nervous! A/F ratios were consistently running in the 14.5-15.8 range. After about two hours and a less than 30ish miles, things changed dramatically. A/F ratios started running consistently in the 12.8 to 13.5 range, mid 12's full throttle, 13.3 idle, saw occasional high 11's for a moment, don't recall the reason but very brief. Can't say that I saw it again abpove the 13's!!! Ran great, really crisp. Ambient temp about 20. Elevation about 3000 feet.

As they might say round her, Aint that odd???

Sounds like updated machines (and 2010's) are rich all around. Polaris is probably avoiding any burn downs at the cost of HP and good performance. Plugs are going to be fouled with the updates. Dealers are putting oil in the first tank of fuel. Let's hope this doesn't continue or everyone will have to have a fuel controller.

i took my 010 out in UP yesterday, stutter's @ 5000 rpm when you grab a handful and also had "check engine" light come on while temp was 124. shut it down for 2 min road rest of day without any warning, but still stutter's and is p&*^ing me off. Does anyone know about a so called chip that burns out and returns the sled to accurate timing? please reply. thanks.

Assaut issues

Same deal with mine. I have put 150 miles plus on '10 updates & i don't know if it any better than last year. Sled runs so inconsisant, spits& sputters that it died on me one time while breaking trail in 3 feet plus and fliped me over bars. A buddy of mine is having close to same issues with his Assault. Not very confident with updated motor thats for shur. :face-icon-small-dis

I stopped at the dealer today and talked for a while about what could be wrong. He said that the max detonation trigger was going off causing the sled the be in "limp home" mode. That is tripped by either bad gas, or by overheating. I had 89 octane fuel in it and was riding in the powder filled ditch. I am going to try some octane boost and ice scratchers and see if that helps at all. 18 trouble filled miles on it so far.

ps- my old man has a 09 updated D8 and is hesitating at mid range too...

What octane rating is your premium fuel? In my 08 manual it says to run 91 octane. I only use 91 octane and still put in a little octane boost for personal peace of mind. Are you leaving the mapping wires unplugged or plugging them in?

To restate what I said above in fewer words
Expect sled to run very poorly with the premix. Further expect it to still be somewhat tempermental for the next quarter tank of premium. Maybe this time is needed to burn the carbon crust off the piston??? This then comes back to the 200+/- breakin miles. Then judge what you got.

i understand the whole "break in" period. I have owned plenty of new sleds before and never had one run as bad as this one. if everyone's sleds ran like sh!t for the first 200 miles you wouldnt sell a lot of new sleds... im hoping it takes 50-75 miles to get the bugs out or i may be looking for a different sled.

If I were having problems with an updated or NEW machine I certainly wouldn't have an SLP pipe on it. Leave the stock pipe on it until you get it running right.

I would give it some time as well, hopefully it is from the extra break-in oil. Fuel controllers might be a required item???

We noticed this two weeks ago on our test sled. The problem we found happens somewhere between 5,000-6,100 rpm. Usually the check engine light comes on first. Then it will shut the engine down into the fail safe range by retarding the timing.

Once you pull over and shut off the engine for a couple of minutes, it goes away until the next episode.

We found that by keeping rpm up over 7,000 (we do a lot of ripping the throttle to keep rpm zipping through the mid range) and we can avoid the problem.

We've been on the phone with the Polaris engineers. They are aware and close to a solution.

break in

Ive read a bunch of posts where people are having problems with their sleds. It seems that every time I read one everybodys is putting oil in the gas tank to break in the motor. I live in AK and when I went to pick up my sled, 2010 155 800 rmk Dragon, the dealer said specifically DONT ADD ANY OIL TO THE GAS, EVEN FOR BREAK IN. THE DEALER SAID THAT IT CAN CAUSE THE INIJECTORS TO BOG OR GO BAD AND CAN ALSO CAUSE THE PLUGS TO FOUL OUT, BUT THEY DID SAY TO TAKE IT EASY ON THE FIRST RIDE. I used 91 octane fuel my first ride and DIDNT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS at all, no bogging, hiccups, or cutting out. Why would all teh other dealers say to do that but not mine. I read only one or two other posts where someone said they didnt add any oil either and they had zero problems also.

My buddy has an arctic cat M800 2008 and he went to the dealer with me when I picked it up and he thought that was a little strange also (adding no oil to the fuel for break in). Well, he was looking in his arctic cat manual and for the 800's it says to add oil to the gas for break in, but, for the M1000's it says not to add oil for break in. I dont know why this is, but maybe it was engineered that way, who knows, hope this helps.
