2008 Chevy/GMC 6.0 L Truck

Anyone have one? If so what are your thoughts, to do you like them? How does it tow? How bad is the gas mileage? Anyone know how it tows compared to the new ford diesels? What are your overall thoughts?

Thanks

We have one for a shop truck. under powered, 10 mpg empty, and feels like you're on a teeter totter when you have 500 lbs in it.

To bad chevy doesn't make the 8.1 still.

No gas motor is gonna tow like a diesel

I bought a late model 07, same as the 08s... sucked... had issues with driveline alignment and it spent the first month in the shop and chevy wouldn't stand behind it -well, they fixed it but then they expected me to be happy with shims for a final fix and no extended warrenty! i FINALLY broke it in and am now getting about 13 mpg. if you go over 60 you see a big drop, but you get tha with diesel too... towing sleds on a deck. it can do it just fine and hold 80 over the passes! but it SUCKS the gas!! down to 9.... however, do the calcs and depending on how much you drive it still might be less than a diesel if you consider the up front costs of diesel, maint costs and the cost of diesel vs gas right now....

if i had it to do all over again i would prolly still go gas but i would get the standard. don't like the way their new trannismission works. if you're in tow haul coming down a hill and tap the brakes it shifts down. with the winter driving and sleds on the deck it put me in a sketchy position every now and then. don't use it any more... and the 'manual shift' is set up to protect the truck so much you can't get it to wind up or down at all... still shifts too much for my liking on snowy roads!! shifts really smoothly though -which is good except it's hard to tell when it will! will make summer time driving nice though....

i got an crew cab with a full box. it's not the smoothest ride, but it's a big truck... i prolly wouldn't go that big in the body, it's nice to have but with gas the way it is i prolly shoulda made some sacrifices and lived with out a TON of 'room'.

the finish on the truck... well, i think the idea that chevy has the nice finish is kinda old school, the other trucks have just as nice of a finish these days...

the motor... ya, it's a beast.... i thought at first it was HORRIBLE because it really sucked the gas. my brother busted me out and asked how much my foot was in it?!?! opps! it gets up and go and is fun to drive, but you pay the price! but like i said, if i could do it over again knowing the prices and the market i wouldn't go with that big of a truck.... you will have little to no resale value on it... the market is changing, bigger is just not worth it.

also, yes, some diesels can get 22 mpg but they drop when they're towing too and when they really step on it. in fact i've heard they drop faster than gas motors when you step on em! also, looking at the costs of things include the chips and performance things people are doing to most of those diesels to get that outta them....

just my thoughts. i wouldn't do the 6.0L. and after my last chevy experience i wouldn't go with them either and i had a chev with 200,000 miles on it before that that i loved. i think i got a lemon, not that all of them are lemons but i got one and chevy did a REALLY poor job of standing by it. it was a 4 month ordeal where they changed caseworkers 4 times on me and offered me less than what i had originally but with fancy wording. i didn't fall for it and busted em out. they agreed and said, well we can't offer you any more then.... sorry.... SUCKS TO BE YOU!!!! long story, ugh, i can't believe i even got started on this.... but ya.... i don't think the 6.0L is the best rig out there unless you ONLY care about being able to pass everyone while going up a hill at 80 towing a few sleds!!

I've been running a 6.0 gasser for 5 years and 100,000 miles trouble free, combined with the best ride in the industry. I get 13 MPG empty and 10.5 MPG pulling my boat and small snowmobile trailer. It actually tows satisfactorily for a gasser but is weak compared to the diesels. I drive a 2008 Ford twin turbo 6.4L. for work. The turbo lag is terrible, it gets 13 MPG empty and 9.1 MPG towing a small trailer and 8.5 MPG pulling a triple axle heavy duty trailer. My fords ride is positively worse than the Model T (I rode in one in a parade, I know). Is the extra power worth the cost?????

ya, what he said, but mine took a little longer to get there!! but i dunno that even the 6 is worth it! i ran some calcs on how much i tow and how much i drive w/o towing.... the 6 wasn't worth it. pride got in the way of my decision and now i regret it!!

2008 GMC, pulls great, 8 MPG pulling this trailer across country, Banks PDA and couple other goodies just so I don't get bored.

My work truck is a 2005 2500 HD with the 6.0 engine and 410 gears. I have 94,000 miles and only one problem which was a rear axle seal. The truck seems like a pouch from a dead stop, but once you get going down the highway and get on it to pass, it does very well for big truck hauling weight. I get 10.5mpg maybe 11.5mpg if I take it easy. I also have tool boxs on each side of the bed along with one on the floor of the bed filled with tools, so I do carry around some weight.

The most I have towed is a Monte SS with a 454, while an all steel trailor. I thought it pulled VERY WELL. I put in drive(4th gear) and put the tow/haul on.

If I was going to buy a truck for mainly hauling a 2-4 place I would look into a 6.0. Maybe be better than paying for that gold that is now called deisel. One thing to think about is the deisel motor might last longer?

Allthough a guy in our group has a Duramax and that is a sweet rig pulling the 4 place. He does not have to stop at every gas staion like we do. I think it is due to a bigger tank??

Dad has a 2008 1500 Vortec Max ... pretty damned nice truck.

I think that the motor would be best mated to a 5 or 6 speed transmission, but it still tows the 24' enclosed acceptably. Not as well as my 8.1L, but sure one hell of a lot better than the 5.3L did. He gets about 10 towing the enclosed, about 17 @ 75 on the highway. Not bad miledge for a 360 horsepower motor.

If you get one I'd recommend going with the 4.10's instead of the 3.73's ...

It definatley has the most get up and go of any stock truck I've ever ridden in, including the D-maxes....

before my dad got his duramax he had a 03 chevy 6.0L gasser. 110,000 of troubble free miles. gas milage isnt the greatest but they do rip. the reason they feel doggy from a dead stop is because GM programs "torque management" into the computer to pull timming back during hard acceleration. with some programmers you can adjust the torque management to get rid of it all together and then they really rip.

the 6.0L is very proven IMO and pulls very good for a stock truck, but as said before nothing pulls like a diesel. esp. a duramax/allison.

stalefish i though i would see you post on this thread haha...but lets be serious here guys nothing pulls like a 5.4triton and you cant beat the new ford 6.4 diesel!!! yeah ford!

Dude that 5.4L ford small block is a joke of a motor ... for a motor that supposedly produces a lot of "down low" power, my 5.3L SBC out pulled the Ford 5.4L I had for awhile ... that 5.4L is a total dog motor IMO.

my brothers company has a 02 6.0 3/4t with 242,000 miles on it being abused like no other, no trouble til last week, lost a rocker arm/pushrod, back on the road again,

ya, i think the older chevs are nicer than the newer!! 200 thou on my little 4.7L from 01 and she's still going strong, i gave her to my dad. i hauled two sleds on the deck and every now and then a few on a trailer as well so i worked the heck outta that rig!! got about 9 mpg but couldn't pass going over the passes.... got about 17 cruisin around town unloaded!! the only thing my 6L has is i can step on her and she'll go. plus, i hate to be a naysayer but the new body style is UGLY!!! i almost didn't buy one just based off looks!! that huge bumper is just plain ridiculous!

I bought an 08 Chevy Crew cab 2500 HD about 3 weeks ago with the 6.0. It is one impressive truck. The power is very strong when towing. I pull a 28' travel trailer and 2 Grizzlies on a deck and it handles it with no problem. It will do 65 up the pass if you want to. I'm getting about 8.5-9 MPG towing and about 14 empty. Pull the trigger, you won't be dissappointed.

I looked at the Duramax also and couldn't justify that extra $5000 grand on the price tag and the $1 per gallon extra for fuel not to mention that higher maintenance costs.
