2008/2009 Turpin Meadow Ranch & Togwotee Pass/CD Trail Update

1 month to opening. That is hard to believe. The average temperature has dropped and I will soon begin updating information on snowfall & snow depths.

Happy Halloween to all of you die hard riders.

Snow in forecast

Happy 1st day of November to all and snow is in the forecast. We are seeing a cooling trend in the next 7 days which equates to snow at 7,000 feet and above. Today it appears that snow should be falling at elevation above 9500 feet.

Update

This morning I awoke to a dusting of snow here at the ranch. So snow fell at 7,000 feet last night. The forecast for the next 3 days is snow. We should see significant snowfall at 8,500 feet and above. Winter has begun. :D:D

Update

It is a beautiful day in Jackson Hole. We have 4 inches of snow on the ground with a foot and 1/2 of new snow reported at the top of the mountains. Blue sky and the Tetons are gorgeous this morning. And of course, it is definitely winter. Awoke to 7 degrees this morning. We are expecting snow every day for next 5 days. No sign yet of any significant snow storms but will keep you posted.

Have a great day...

Update

We are having gorgeous weather after a week of snow. Snow depths average over 2 feet above 9,000 feet. We did lose snow at the ranch (7,000feet) due to rain. :(

The forecast for the week is partly cloudy with no snow in the forecast except for Wednesday.

Avalanche warning is low.

Ride safe and have a great weekend.

Update

Happy Thanksgiving. I hope everyone is enjoying their Thanksgiving. I recently returned from vacation and to wonderful weather, Sunny and in the mid 20s. I would say that we are average for snow for Thanksgiving. Right now we are waiting for a shift in the weather toward snow. We are expecting storms in the next couple of days although no big storms in the forecast yet.
The following is the Avalanche report:

The General Avalanche Hazard is LOW. A mostly stable snowpack, comprised of faceted snow and a variety of decomposing crusts, exists above 7,500 feet. Widespread and well developed surface hoar also persists on shaded and partially shaded aspects. Avalanches are unlikely today. However, caution is advised in cliff areas and in steep couloirs.

We have 1/2 foot of snow here at the ranch (7,000 feet). I will begin posting everyday going forward. So be watching, I will let you all know when the storms start. By December 7th of last year, we did have 28" at Togwotee and Brooks.

Have a great day.

Happy Thanksgiving Dennis

Hey bud,
Anything worth/safe enough riding on up that way yet?
Hoping to be heading that way if it is worth the trip.
Most of the group will be hard pressed to join me unless
you get 50" of fresh pow in the next wk.
Let's talk soon

Hi Dan,
Today it is snowing. :-)
Snow is forecasted for 8 of the next 10 days. I would guess that the snow would be equal to last year when you were here. Although, I am hoping for one big storm that would drop a couple of feet. Have a great day. Talk to you soon.

Update

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. This morning we awoke to snow flurries. We are expecting up to 1/2 foot of new snow in the next 48 hours. The forecast calls for snow for 8 of the 10 days. We are hopeful that we will have some big storms.

Expect mostly to partly cloudy skies along with scattered flurries as a Pacific trough brushes the region this morning. Northwest flow develops behind this trough keeping light snow possible throughout the day.

Snow at Togwotee

Hi,
Rode from Togwotee Lodge yesterday, east and south, found lots of snow on meadows, suprised there was a little bit of a base. Had total fun! Would rate day as unbelievable for as little snow (2ft or more and did not dig dirt!).

Many thanks for you update from your lodge.

Overnight we had a weather change. I hope that it comes to pass and based on what I see out my office window, it appears it will. We are forecasted to receive 1/2 foot of snow at the ranch (7,000 ft) in the next 36 hours and a foot to foot and 1/2 above 9,000 feet. Below is the forecast at the ranch:

Today: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 35. West wind between 9 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Tonight: Scattered snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 23. West northwest wind between 7 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Sunday: Scattered snow showers before 11am, then scattered rain and snow showers. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 37. West northwest wind between 7 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Good News/Bad News

Today is a good news/bad news day. The bad news first, we received very little snow overnight. We received a dusting of snow at the ranch (7000 ft) and snotel is reporting only 1" at 9,000 ft. The good news is that it is to snow everyday over the next week. Today we are forecasted at 2" to 4". The radar is showing that it snowing on the pass as I type this. Based on normal conditions, we could receive a major storm anytime and it looks like the jet stream is starting to move into its December flows. Yesterday we did ride and was pleasantly suprised with the snow depths. Snowtel is reporting the snow depth at Togwotee Pass as 26" and 3 1/2" of new snow. The following is the avalanche report..

A moist northwest flow will keep skies mostly cloudy and bring an additional inch or two to the upper elevations.

Temperature Forecast for 8,000´-9,000´: Rising into the upper 20s.

The General Avalanche Hazard is LOW. Strong winds and dense new snow have created very shallow pockets of wind slab on steep, wind-loaded slopes near ridgelines. Backcountry travelers might be able to trigger one of these pockets, but the consequences should be relatively minor. Avalanches are unlikely below 9,000 feet.

Ride safe..

Has anyone actually been out on the sleds up there......and whats the report? Is there rideable snow at the pass or at least enough to have some fun on?

Its snowing!

Today we are receiving snow. The forecast is for 8" to 10". Right now there is over 30" being recorded on Togwotee Pass. We have riden two of the last 4 days and found the riding to be ok for early season. We did find some bowls with plenty of powder. But I would not say epic. We are forecasted for above average precipitation. The following is the forecast:

This Afternoon: Snow. Steady temperature around 18. Wind chill values as low as zero. Blustery, with a northwest wind around 23 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow, mainly after 11pm. Low around 16. Wind chill values as low as zero. Breezy, with a west northwest wind around 22 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 16. Wind chill values as low as -6. Breezy, with a west wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Wednesday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 9. Wind chill values as low as -5. Northwest wind between 7 and 11 mph.

Thursday: A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 18. West wind around 11 mph.

Light snow will begin by noon as a Pacific system moves into the area. Snow intensity will increase in the afternoon with several inches of accumulation possible by Wednesday morning.

Temperature Forecast for 8,000´-9,000´: Upper twenties.

Snowfall Expected Next 24 Hours: 4 - 6"

The General Avalanche Hazard is LOW this morning but may increase to MODERATE by evening. Shallow pockets of wind slab could be released on steep, wind-loaded slopes. The possibility of backcountry travelers triggering one of these slides will increase with rapid snowfall rates in the afternoon. Avalanches are unlikely below 8,500 feet.

Update

Our first storm was a little bit of a disapppointment for us. Of course, we were praying that it would drop 2 foot even though it was only forecasted for 6 to 12 inches. But it only dropped about 4 to 8 inches of new powder. It is snowing on and off today. But little is expected over the next couple of days. Maybe another 4" by Thursday.

I am not a weather forecaster, but there sure looks like another storm is forming out in the Pacific. We will wait to see if it develops into anything. Right now, the forecast is for snow everyday except Friday. We will be riding tomorrow and will let everyone know what we find.
