2005 800 Summit Outer Crank Seal (help)

Guys,
I need some help here. As the title says, I have a 2005 800 Summit that had a leaking crank seal(the seal behind the primary clutch behind the plate with four screws. Anyway, it has been leaking and splattering grease for about two years and last year it got really bad so this year I needed to replace it before I grenaded it.

When I bought the sled it had 2200 miles on it and the folks I bought it from said it had a new crank installed as it took out a crank and piston.

Anyway, yesterday, I took the crank seal out and it drained about 1/8 of a cup of what I though was two stroke oil. I expected to see some of that expensive grease, or in this case very little if any grease. The sled has been sitting for about a month without firing.

Now for the question. Is it possible that it is two stroke oil in there? I was told that there was two seals, one on the inside and one on the outside. Is it possible that whoever installed that crank put crappy grease on that bearing and the grease has broken down?

Do I have bigger problems than just a leaking seal? My machine seemed to run well last season.

Any help here would be great.

Thanks,

Paul

If the crank seal was as bad as you are saying it should have been running really lean. I lost the same crank seal last year and it got worse through just one day of riding, I changed it immidiately so not to burn down my motor. There should have been that grease packed around the bearing and if all yours had blown out I am amazed that you didn't destroy your motor. Replace both seals while your in there.

Like I said, that bearing was getting lubricated with whatever leaked out(two stoke oil or broken down grease). It was about an 1/8 of a cup. SHould I just pack new grease in there from the PTO side and monitor it. Can I get enough grease in there without splitting the case? I don't seem to be leaned out any as the plugs look good and not white.

Because your engine has already been torn down. I would say that they did away with the grease. Most of the time when builders put in new cranks, they drill the engine case so 2 stroke oil lubes the bearing instead of the "expensive grease" you are refering to. We did my buddies last year after a rod bearing went. New crank, new seals, new pistons, new bearings, drilled the case and did not use grease. Works better than the grease and never gets hard or starves the bearings for lube.
Hope this helps,

Thanks Crasher,

This engine in not torn down as of yet. I also doubt that the was drilled to allow two stoke oil to penetrate the bearings. I bought it from Crooked Creek Guest Ranch here in Wyoming. It was a one year rental. Should I tear down this motor of just pack the expensive grease in there? Can I do this from the outside. Not sure where to go from here. Thanks again for your help.

I would check the crank runout on the pto end and if it has more than say. .004 I would tear it down to retrue and repack. .004 is just what I use, this number is debatable. If runout is ok than I'm not sure what to tell you.

When I bought the sled it had 2200 miles on it and the folks I bought it from said it had a new crank installed as it took out a crank and piston.

From what you stated in your first post. This engine has been torn down and new crank installed. If this is true, and you found 2 stroke oil in the bearing instead of grease, the case has been drilled. I would be suprized if it hadn't been done. Most if not all performance shops and general engine builders do this when a crank bearing goes or just rebuilding an engine.

K guys, thanks for all the help. To test if the block has been drilled out can I just put the seal in and fire it up for a minute or so? Will it fill that cavity in that quick of time without damaging the motor if it is not drilled?
