2004 yz250, good deal or no?

so i''ve been looking around for a dirtbike and found one from a nearby town. its a:
2004 YZ 250 with the following accessories/mods
-262cc big bore kit
-custom port & polish job by bruce sass of denver colorado
-dr. d full exhaust
-hot start lever
-a sprocket with one more tooth than the stock one was put on the bike for a little more bottom end power
-raceworks fork revalve kit
-brand new tires
-renthal fatty handlebars
-pro taper triple clamp

this bike has been extremely well taken care of even though has been rode hard. he rode this bike in colorado while he was in college out there in the mountains and only raced it once and decided against doing that ever again. but hey its a dirtbike what can a guy expect. the guy regularly maintenenced the bike and is askin $2000.00 for the bike with all the mods and stock parts included. what im wondering is if this is a steal *or* should i steer away from this. im thinking if i went to him with cash i could possibly get this for $1700-1800. ALSO, i have yet to ok this with my folks. im 17 years old and i can pay for this myself. just needs to be ok with them...(not sure why tho if its my money) but anyways my ma is against it she thinks im going to get hurt and dump a bunch of money into it like my snowmobile...well i havent asked dad because i dunno if hes going to go for it and i dont want a no from him so i been to scared to ask. any ideas for how to convince him i should get it? any input would be greatly appreciated!

My 17yr old races a 250f and they are good solid bikes. The 262 kit scares me a little. Just like a modded sled motor, they tend to get tempermental. They make good power, but you may end up doing more wrenching than you are hoping for. That price sounds like a "fair" price for that. It's not a steal, but it's not a bad price either. That said, if my 17 yr old brought that home without asking first, even if "it was his own money" , he would never ride it! Listen to your folks, give them a chance. You may not always realize it, but they are probably just looking out for you. My boy also races a 450f, yet I chew his @ss most when he is screwing off in the yard on his little pit bike and just being STUPID! Talk to you folks, give them a chance. Respect is a two way street. Good luck on getting your new ride.

17....hmmmm wait a year then do what ever the hell you want :D :beer;:beer;:beer;

On a side note, a stock Mx bike is almost good enough to compete with and i know its nice ot have a worked over custom machine but i would stay away from big bores in sleds, dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, pretty much anything 2 stroke. Its more fun to ride then to wrench.

I don't think you really need a mod motor... A box stock 250f is going to have more than enough power unless you're riding intermediate+ level. The price is pretty good, but I've seen too many guys around here buy used race bikes (or sleds for that matter) and have hard times with them. :mad: Who knows, you might luck out and get a reliable rocketship, but then again, the dude could be dumping it due to mechanical issues.

I say hold out and find a stocker with low hours, then you can throw on suspension or whatever mods you like later...:beer;

That's a pretty good buy if you can get it for $1700 or so. I don't see your parents telling you can't get it. Just tell them before you buy it. Post some pictures of it if you can.

where did he say it was a F? i thought he was talking stroker...if so hell ya buy it. i paid 2000 for my 03 yz 125 and that was a deal. Course if it's an f and modded, stay away unless you like wrenching and a motor that is higher strung and more tempramental then chubby when he gets his period.

yeah i've heard of bruce sass and sounds like hes nothing short of a perfectionist. the only reason this bike was bored out was because when it blew up once it scarred the cylinder walls so he talked to sass and sass just recommended putting a small big bore in it. bike was raced only one time but rode hard which doesnt bother me because i know this guys brother (used to go to high school with him) and i know they take very good care of their bikes. though i did look the bike frame over very well and saw no cracking. and on the side note i am not looking for something to race just want a hobby bike, even though this one has a few mods i look at it as a steal.

well anyways asked dad today and he nonshalantly said no. wants me to buy a fourwheeler, i said i cant afford one and he said buy in on it with your brother, well he doesnt want to do that either because he just bought a newer pickup. what do i say to this? said i would buy it myself of course and no reply. then he asked who i would ride with and i said theres a few guys with bikes around here from neighboring towns and a few other buddies have quads. no reply......how do i convince him? im sick of being told how to spend my own hard earned money.

When do you turn 18? At that point you can do what ever....

On the other note.... parents are just looking out for their kids.... It terifies them to kow what can happen when doing these extreme activites....

talk him into getting a bike, then buy this and enjoy some of the best times of your lives:face-icon-small-win
Oh yeah, and you can tell him I said it was a good idea; my old man and I kept close thru some tough "growing up" years where I was an azz, but when we went riding, all that stayed home. get two bikes...

I work in the ER and I have seen more people killed on quads....seen alot more broken bones too. But bikes equal bigger breaks when it happens.

Best advice that I can give you being a dad of a 17 yr old is this. Drop the attitude when you talk to your dad about this. If you want to be allowed to make adult decisions, be prepared to act like one or you will not stand a chance of getting your way. Atleast my boy does not. Do your homework and think it through. Pleade your case like a lawyer would...not an angry teenageager speaking like one to a father that is not ready to listen. Attitude and the way in which you speak and control yourself makes a big difference. I hope your dad does let you buy the bike. If not, there are many more bikes out there and if you show your dad that you are mature enough to have one, the day should come that he lets you get one. He may even suprise you and help you out with one. I hope this helps you, not meaning to preach to you here, just trying to help you see both sides of the fence.
Good Luck
Tim

when i asked him i was calm and wasnt raising my voice or talking with an attitude i just asked him why i couldnt buy one and he said "because" or wouldnt say anything at all....why cant he just tell me a ligit reason or talk about it. instead he trys to put it off and not talk about the subject. i dont get it?

"because" means: "because I don't trust dirtbikes and I don't want my kid hurt on a dirt bike"

Do you have dirt-bike experience? If not, your dad has a good position in saying "no". A YZ 250 will but a rookie on his head real fast.

Very good point.

well, i caught dad in a pretty good mood tonight and talked to him about me buying that dirtbike. he doesnt think im going to ride it enough and isn't so sure about the whole deal. i know my mom absolutely doesn't want me to buy it because she calls it a waste of money & another money pit toy. so i kinda think dad has no choice but to somewhat agree with her. anyways he would rather i bought a fourwheeler 100%. i told him how big the price difference is and i also told him my heart has never been in owning a fourwheeler. (i've wanted a dirtbike since i was very little). he just said he doesnt know and has to think about it for awhile. honestly im frustrated as i dont think they need to baby me and tell me how i can spend my money. makes a kid feel like incompitent (sp?). anything i can/should do to maybe help my cause?

At this point you got what you needed, an intelligent, mature conversation. Now it is your turn to be mature, give you Dad some time like he asked for. It you bug him every two minutes like a two yr old, guess how you will be treated. I can understand the answers your folks gave you and they are valid points for a parent looking out for their son at ANY age. Take this time to think about what they have said and see if they have a valid point, maybe they do. If you have a better case to plead, take this time to think about how you are going to present your side.
Good Luck
Tim

i know what you are saying ultra but how long do i wait to ask? day or two? i would like the bike asap obviously as anyone wants their new moto toys but i am so strung out on getting this, a bike is all i think about lately and i am more than willing to pay for it on my own. i know they would rather i didnt buy it but how do i go about it if i get an answer from them im not looking for? i was scared ****less to ask dad today because i didnt know how he'd handle the question and didnt want a no for an answer which is why it took so much courage to ask again. they just dont think i'll use it like i say and think its all ina fad. my snowmobile has been no fad from day one. a guy gets kidna down when he's replacing pistons and curses ever buying it but i know for a fact i would ride it every chance i get. oh what to do what to do.....
