2002 Polaris 800 Questions?

Alright, I have a few questions for you savvy Polaris guys. I am new to snowmobiles and am looking to upgrade a few things this summer. I have a 2002 Polaris RMK 800, 156" track. I would like to put a new track on it. I am thinking about the challenger extreme 2.5". Does anything special have to be done to fit this track on my sled?
Also the gears on my sled are 19:39. What are the thoughts on this ratio and is that a good ratio to run if I was going to change to the challenger extreme.
Thanks for any input.

you will need 3" pitch drivers to run the CE, possibly a smaller diameter driver as well to clear the paddles.

As for gearing alot of poeple run 19/43 for the mtns.

I would agree, I have 19:41 in my sled and it does well most of the time, but 19:43 would be even better to help hold track speed on the long climbs.

Ya you'll need a 74P if you go 19/43 and you'll need 7T 3P drivers with the Camo Extreme. 19/43 works well with stock power. I have a titanium axle with new Avid 3P 7T drivers on it. It needs some welding near the spline because of a bad bearing. I'm asking $200 and I have a guy in Portland that will do the repairs for about $100.

You may have to save these to your computer and then zoom in. The text is tiny.

Copied from someone's previous post:

CDx2)/.375 + (TS+BS)/2= pitch

CD=center distance (for you 8.373" on the 2008/2007/2006 RMK)
TS=top sprocket
BS=bottom sprocket

20/39 74 pitch

20/40 74

20/41 74

20/42 74 or 76

20/43 76

20/45 78

19/39 72

19/40 74

19/41 74

19/42 74

19/43 74

19/46 78

18/40 72

20/39 – 1.95:1

20/40 – 2.00:1

20/41 – 2.05:1 (Lukes 935 & Carls Recommended for the 975)

20/42 – 2.1:1

20/43 – 2.15

19/39 – 2.05:1 (HIghMark-Rec recommended for the 935)

19/40 – 2.105:1

19/41 – 2.16:1

19/42 – 2.21:1

19:/43 – 2.26:1

18/40 – 2.22:1

One thing I noticed in this thread that hasn't been mentioned is that if you are going to reduce your driver circumference by approximately 10% you have already geared down. If your going to the smaller drivers, I wouldn't mess with the gearing, there isn't any clutching efficiency to be gained. 19/43 with smaller drivers may leave you with a sled with no top end and a very lazy weak backshift requiring you to lighten up your primary weights by a couple grams and requiring you to buy a lower angle helix.

I agree with addict, you should weigh the benefits and either change your drivers or just your gearing, doing both can lead to numerous complications and tonz of trouble shooting issues which can take weeks to weed out, I never change drivers on any sled I ride, simple clutching and gearing usually will take you to the extreme your looking for..

You guys bring up a very good point that didn't even cross my mind. I am pretty certain that I am going to put a new track on. I was wanting to go to the camo challenger extreme which you all know is 2.5" paddles. So do you think the way to go is to not mess with the gears or chain at all and just go to a 7 tooth driver? That should make clearance for the new track and also help to gear down the sled? Don't I have to go to a 7 tooth driver to be able to fit a 2.5" paddle?

Another question I have for someone: what is the longest track I could fit without having to extend the tunnel or rail extensions? The stock track is 156". Is it possible to fit a 159" or 162" just by putting bigger wheels on?

Thanks for all of your guys input. It is really helping me out.

I don't want to be misleading, I have a 2.25'' track on my 02 poo and I'm still running the stock drivers with no problems at all.. Althought it IS very tight around the bulkhead (i think when I measured it was like 3/4" clearance) but it still turns cleanly and freely with not grinding or rubbing.. 2.5 is quite a bit of lug though and it might not clear with the 9 point drivers... you have to drop your chaincase and pull your shaft to put the track on anyways so maybe take a little extra time and just see if the track will clear with the stock drivers before changing them out, then let me know so I know as well:D I mean, it's worth the research since you've got all that stuff tore down anyways, might help with future modifications. Good luck and lets see some pics when you get er dun

If he doesn't change the driver's he'll definetly have to do a drop an roll . Or he could remove the front cooler and run a U- cooler .

When I start working on it I will measure it and take some pictures for you. Probably won't start on that for another month or so. Gotta figure out exactly what I am gonna do and get the right parts.

Anyone else know if that track will fit for sure or not without changing drivers? Also should I go to an 7 or 8 tooth driver?
Again thanks for all your input snowest.

If you have stock drivers now your going to need new ones either way. The Camo Extreme is 3 pitch and the stock Polaris track is 2.52. With leaving the front cooler and running a stock chain case you'll need the 7t 3 inch pitch drivers.

Thanks. That was what I was wanting to hear.
