2 2013 Pros, 1 motor sounds loose, other doesn't?

Hey guys hoping you can maybe help me out. Brother and I both have 13 pros. My motor sounds "looser" than his when it idles, warmed up or not. They've both got maybe 6-700 miles on them. Have not checked compression or anything, just been riding it. Seems to run great, no complaints there. It just sounds noticeably different than his. Guess I'm more curious than anything....

Probably something you should check out, sooner than later. Break a piston skirt off or something and it could end up costing a lot more than just a new top end.

I think it is hard to isolate a noise on a sled like this accurately. The clutch makes noise, the exhaust system makes noise as it shakes with the engine, could even be motor mounts allowing it to move more.

If your engine actually makes metallic sounds, whether a bearing or piston, I suspect you will know very soon, because it will probaby come apart.

Doing a compression check will give you an indicator of the engines health. Pulling the head and measuring the piston and ring gap tells you more. Puling the cylinders off tells you more yet, you can look for cracks and check wrist pin bearings, and so on.....

I might try to pinpoint the noise, real problematic engine noises usually get worse with rpm, not go away.

Hard to tell without taking it apart... I put a new top end in last fall and it shook like a mother bear after (never paid attention before the top end). Sent my clutches to Indy Dan and after that it was smooth as butter.

sled tip

Take the exhaust valves out, you should be able to see in if its score or starting to rock causing a sharp edge on top

I think before everyone starts giving all of their ideas, more info is needed otherwise spinning in circles and getting no where will be the answer. Again the question is what does "Loose" sound like?

I'll fire it up this weekend and see if I can get a better description or video if the audio quality is captured. Thanks to all that have responded!!

Before I would tear into the motor I would swap primary clutches and see if the clutch isn't the problem.

Noise.

I've noticed this noise on both Polaris and cats this year. I hear it most on mine and others when you kill the motor, makes a racket just before stopping.
Rotate the clutch back and forth with your hands and you can most likely hear the noise coming from the cylinder...I think it's just the play between the cylinder walls and piston. My wifes 600 pro does this, my RKtek Drop in Kit does this, buddies Bikeman kit 800 pro does this, friends 800 Suzuki makes the same noise.
Also can hear the noise more when switching the motor from forward to reverse.

I do believe mine is a bit louder at the end of the season than the start, I have about 2000 mi on these pistons. Going to swap them out before the next season just for good measure.

BTW. Last year I had the wrist pin boss go bad on one of my pistons. Woosner pistons. Wrist pin could move up and down about 1/16 inch,,, that made a mega rattle.
Hope this helps.

roni87 and possibly likkerpig: The noise you are hearing is more than likely from the Drive (Primary) Clutch. The guide buttons on the spider and the towers on the moveable sheave wear and the clearance gets wider. (FYI: The forward drive side button generally wears the most as it is loaded more). This creates what I call a clatter noise when the engine is at idle or lower rpm when the clutch is not engaged on the Drive Belt. The noise will get louder as the season goes on as the buttons are wearing every ride. An easy way to check the amount of clearance you have in the buttons to towers is to take the faceplate off of the clutch (be cautious of the spring pressure when removing) then grab the moveable sheave and rotate it back and forth, you will be able to feel and visually see the amount of clearance you have. Tighten the button clearances and the noise will lessen if that is what you are hearing. Note: This noise will generally get a little quieter as the engine and clutch heat up due to expansion.

Fired em up this weekend. I just have a noisy motor from what it sounds like. Hard to explain but the motor is just loud compared to the other one. It SEEMS like you can hear the Pistons in the cylinders but I don't know. Could be the clutch I suppose, that makes sense too. I don't know. I'll look at it this fall when they come out of storage....

Thank you to everyone who replied!!!

Check the aluminum heat shield on the pipe, they start to rattle fairly quick. Good place to start, in fact get it hot and grab it with both hands and see if it stops making that noise. :face-icon-small-hap

noise

Can you pull the Y- pipe off and check the piston skirts from there? The Phazer engines would make a rattle noise when a skirt was cracked.
