1st timer going out west, what are the escentuals

as stated above, going out for the first time to Saratoga WY and what are things i should really carry with me, im going with experinced riders (thats what they say) any advice would be awsome, thanks guys!!

Depends.
If you are planning on doing ANY climbing.
Beacon, shovel, probe.

Other stuff you should carry.
First aid kit.
a good GPS with TOPO.
snowbungee
shovel
basic tools
fire making stuff (include tampons, they can be dipped into the fuel tank and used as a fire starter)
spare gloves.
Spare goggles
WATER, drink, lots and lots of water. Dehydration is a major problem with people that arn't used to riding at elevations of 9-11k.
And please, don't leave the parking lot without a spare drive belt. Never seases to amaze me how many people end their day early because they don't have a spare belt.

beacon, beacon, beacon, beacon

I don't care if you are climbing or not, every rider on the mountain should have a beacon just in case they come across a slide that has tracks running in but none running out.

here is a quick list off the top of my head:
  • Pack to haul all gear in
  • shovel (Aluminum only, plastic breaks when you least want it to)
  • water
  • spare layers (weather changes fast)
  • food (granola bars, jerky, fruit snacks, etc)
  • first aid kit
  • survival gear (fire starters - at least three seperate, heatsheet or equivalent, road flares, etc)
  • spare gloves
  • spare goggles

on your sled you should at least have a tool kit, spare belt, spare spark plugs, and possibly a snowbunje and tow strap/rope. Got out of many a stuck last year by having my riding partner tow me out with his Apex.

Hey guys,
Just don't judge the west on what you see this year, snow fall has been bleek. The last 2 years was the time to come. you will still need a longtrack to have any fun.

Also keep in mind to bring multiple sets of Gear Unless you where all Klim or HMK gear (even then I still advise it) and boot dryers to keep your boots dry from one day to the next. WET is your ENEMY.

better start working out before you go out west. work on your breathe cuz its thin air up there. this is for in case if your sled get stuck or walking

sssshhhhh... we want them to judge it on this year so they don't come back too often ;)

Did you replace those bars that you flattened out last ride???

No matter how experienced you MUST have a beacon, probe, shovel and carry them on you. If you wanna use my stuff feel free to call me and Ill hook you up.

ha ha um no, not yet i will do that tomorrow night, i have most the stuff i just need a beacon and i think i found a guy out there that will rent me his. when are you leaving for tog

First timer? You need a Spomey (search this website)...He is 6'5" and 250 lbs. He walks through the snow like a moose and can lift a sled like Sasquatch. When you are hyperventilating and puking in the snow...he has your sled unstuck. Every tool box should have a Spomey...

Yep, safety first...
avy gear (beacon, shovel, probe)
food
water
dress in layers
bring extras of everything (Gloves are probably the most important, socks are nice whe you get back to the truck)
stuff to start fires with (Flares work well, burn hot and bright, cheap; lighters are cheap and compact)
Map of the area, compass, and know how to use the two. A GPS is convienent, but by no means a replacement for a map.
I strongly suggest two-way radios. FRS ones work well. Pack a phone, but I wouldn't depend on it for much more than a paperweight.
Tools for sled repair, extra belt/plugs, zip ties, flagging tape, baling wire, hose clamps, ratchet strap (can double as a tow strap), DUCT TAPE
Knife or three
Basic first aid kit

based on my experience from last weekend

1) ibuprofin
2) lots of cash
3) snowbunjee
4) massuece
5) bong so you can have something to talk about with the skiers

All the above but save the beer for the Hot Springs---strong sunglasses, base ball cap and aspirine for the high altitude head ache.

BCB

Since you dont own a beacon, my guess is you dont know how to use one...in the interest of the peeps you'll be riding with, PLEASE take some time a learn how to use it.

snowbungee! WTF, that is an essential! Ollie you are killing me! :beer;:beer;

If you ride with me, carry a snowbungee. We actually carry 2.

WOMEN - Women are essential for you to bring, lots of them, and BEER - lots and lots of beer. Not necessarily in that order!

The less attractive the women the more beer you must bring!
