1500 miles....now what?

I put 1500 mostly happy miles on my holdover xrs last year. I really like the sled and want to keep it, but am leary about something going wrong. What do you need to do to these sleds to keep them running for more miles? The clutching is dialed, but I have done nothing other than that.

run good oil, buy the extended warrentee and ride hard.

mine let losoe at 4600km or pretty hard riding. aroung 3000km i had the headgaskets andbase gasket go out, changed them and it ran like a clock until 4580ish KM, bone stock just clutching. great sled no doubt,i say keep riding it and have fun

Get the extended warranty for the engine!!!! Mine went at 1600 miles with NO warning. Broke a skirt that took out the bottom end. New '08 engine runs MUCH smoother, so perhaps there was an issue with the original engine from day 1. ??

These motors had a bad batch of the cases being to tight of a tolerence for the bearings, and they would slowly spew chrapnal until the final blow.
I don't think any type of oil would have saved some of those motors.

So you just run them untill they grenade?

I think they took care of the production run that were problematic... but I am sure you could do a serial# check at an honest dealer.

I would pull the cylinders and take a peek, if you are leery, but there were WAAAAY MORE that didn't fail than did. The internet has a bad way of blowing things out of proportion.

You should get another 1500 miles before you need to do anything extensive. Rings, well if it is apart, you might as well swap those.

Good luck/

Thanks for the input. I like this sled so much I think I will run it for one more year....of course that is what I did with my vertical escape, right before I grenaded the crank. Hopefully I will not need a chopper ride when it goes:face-icon-small-win

Is there anything else to worry about, anything out of the ordinary in the drivetrain?

thanks,
duffman

On my 05, I blew a chain, upon inspection, I noticed that the sprockets were, out of alignment by 2mm. I got some shim washers, and lined them up. Other than that, just change out the chaincase oil, and lube everything, and ride. A lot of people say it is a good idea to change the chain every 2nd season.... and keep your old one as a back up.... oh yeah, and keep those clutches clean.

Take a blow gun to both primary and secondard clutches. I do after every ride and a cloud of dust comes out. It takes less than a minute and keeps the ramps clean. A little brake cleaner helps too.

I would not chance it over 3000 k personally. Mine ran awesome till 2950km and crank bearings let loose. 4100km on my 1000 and rod bearing started to chew up the piston skirts. Both times luckily happened during little rides around home, no helicopter. Costs ya either way, just less with out happening in the hills

well, my 03.5 has about 4400kms on it
the crank was rebuilt 400 kms b/f i bought it
i just did the top end a few weeks ago

check out eht pics below
i was literally a 10min ride from a complete metldown
piston had somw wash and my mag side carb boot was trashed
glad i did it now, instead of a chooper ride out

sled is like brand new now
top end re-build only cost me $187
i put in SPI's..not cause they are the best or not/...cause it only cost me $187

but really, it's only 1 year old right?
if your really concerned, rebuilt the top end and drive er hard!!!
