12 vs 13 vs 14

Looking at getting an assault as a back up sled/spring sled /wind blown days. My question is has anybody lined up the different years and does one run better than the rest? I know people say that the 13's run better than the 12's but is that because of the belt drive? I can buy a 13 assault for the same price as a 14 assault and found a decent used 12 to. So has anybody lined up pretty much stock sleds with chain cases from the different years? I like the 13 and 14 for the seat and boards but I can put a drop in kit on a 12 with out a fuel box and its cheaper soooo.

The 13 runs noticeably better than the 12 in stock form. Its not just the belt drive. There's a reason you need a fuel controller on a 13 and not on a 12 the mapping is leaner and better on the 13. However, If you are planning on modding anyway the 12 might be a good option.

I would get the 13 for the boards alone and I believe there were improvements inside the motor on them. If the 14 is the same price do that. Newer will always sell better down the road but may lose more value in the short term.

Well first off the Assaults all have a chain drive not a belt drive. On the 12 there is very little difference between the pro and the assault. Assault has wider A arms and a better shock package than the Pro. So if you are considering a '12 then look at a pro aswell. Many used ones out there where people have upgraded the suspension on the Pro. The '13 sleds have different mapping and of course the running boards. The engine is very much the same as the '12 but has different pistons and thicker cylinder skirts. I don't know the exact differences between the 14's and 13's. I believe the 14's again have different mapping and pistons than the 13's. So obviously if you can get a 14 for the same $ as a 13... that's a no brain'er.

I have a '12 Pro with the drop in kit and love it. Lots of guys have at least changed the running boards, I did which was easy and I love them. I just bought a fuel controller because IMO the sled will run even better with it. Not sure what kind of budget you have but there are some really good deals on '12 pro's out there with some goodies on them. (this is a backup sled right?) If money isn't really an object then for sure buy a 14 and get a warranty.

What sled are you riding now? IF you buy a '14... It may not be your back up sled anymore. You can pickup a '14 for under $10 000 and the
15's will be released in just over a week from now. Just my 2 cents

I have a 13 pro 800 163 luv the sled was just going to buy an assault for the stiff track for the days we do a lot of trail riding and spring time. Also for a back and if I bring someone with that don't have a sled. I know the 13 runs better than a 12 a friend of mine has a 12 but just wanted to know how much is the belt drive vs updates also if the 14 runs better than the 13. Just wish the assault had the front cooler.
