100% Electric Ski Nautique

The first Malibu we owned we put 456 hours on it in one summer. I think that would take a lot of charging.
It is a great idea but for me what if power is not readily available and you are out for the weekend (bring a generator?). Also said our course was about 20 to 30 minutes down river (no wake zone for 2 miles).
Great concept for private lakes and man made lakes where home/power is right there.
What happens if the charge runs out and you can't get home, paddle. Been there done that (with gas not paying attention)
Hopefully the price is not too high and they can get the charge to last say 2 to 3 hours not a # of sets.

There are definitely applications where it would be adequate.
But if you're dropping $35 to $90K the cost of fuel is not a factor.

Also high voltage near the water (charging station) would create some mega-exposure for Nautique's liability carrier.

The idea of instant power and no winterization is appealing.

It would make more sense in a Wake boat where 2000 lbs of batteries would not be a negative.

sure seemed like the ski wake was pretty good in the vid.

For sure these won't be for everyone, but like I said, I am on a lake where you can be anywhere in 5-10 minutes with a 10 horse. And power is close all ready to the dock.

Definitly this is a boat for private or smaller lakes.

I was getting at the fact that adding more batteries to extend run time would not be a weight issue w/ a "wake" boat.

If the charging station is anything like the automotive, it's not just a simple 110V outlet.

Yes, it would be an awesome way to get around the "non-motorized" law

It will be interesting to follow for sure.

The thing about electric cars and with electric boats is the batteries. The batteries won't last forever and you might want to sit down before you find out how much it is to replace them. I worked for Saturn years ago when they came out with an all electric car. They told us that on average you would get about 4 to 5 years on the batteries (assuming they were taken care of and weren't used if unusually hot temperatures) and then they'd have to be replaced. The replacement cost was around $5,000 and they didn't have any kind of core exchange charge. Now I know that technology has gotten a lot better since then and they may last a lot longer now, but they probably are even more money thanks to technology to replace also. Just something I'd look into before I'd start saving your pennies to buy one. I love the idea of not polluting your "private" spots though with a conventional motor but I'd take a GOOD look at the WHOLE picture before getting too excited.

Make it a closed bow boat and also put some solar cells all over the bow. :)

AND use the kinetic energy of the boats speed to charge the batteries.
Might be able to fashion some sort of generator that uses the boats speed to turn some sort of pick-up that charges the batteries.
Sort of like the old generators we used to put on our bikes that powered our headlights as a kid. If you flipped it over so it layed on the top of the tire, it would run the headlight as long as the bike was rolling.

It could work off the transom sort of like the pick-up tube does for the speedo.

Kim, wouldn't it be fun though?

Just think about it...if it WERE able to be made right now.

Electric Sled.
12 hours of battery time.
Same weight as what we have.
Just a couple of hours of charge time.

How fun would that be to do that as quiet as a golf cart? VERY FUN!!!

good ideas Scott.

Also the possibility of solar panels and charging with all that wasted space on top of the boat lift canopy.

for sure though there are issues to come with the batteries, replacement, etc. But the way gas prices are going it might be a wash or cheaper.

I just saw a video about a hybrid wake boat, it was a pro kids boat and his dad said they spent 5k in fuel on the previous model in one year and were on pace to cut that in half....that is huge. I will look for the video later today.

Would be fun, but would we have to have huge azzes and wear those goofy golf pants? :face-icon-small-win Got Happy Gillmore?

How would some of these clowns make them loud?

Maf got me thinking.

There are some lakes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and various state parks that are electric motor only....can you imagine the reaction you would get from tree huggers and rangers when you were ripping up the lake in an electric ski boat:love:

They'd be scrambling to make max speed orinances REALLY quickly.
