09 D8 Blew up

Heading to dealer today with my 09 d8. 1200 miles after update rebuild
No compresoin mag side. Second rebuild. Depending on polaris answer
will decide what brand I will be riding next season, after being loyal to polaris for 25 years.

Man these troubles stink. If you change your mind I will tell you IMO on how to fix it. First I really believe that without a fuel controller you will burn down due to the lean midrange. Second is the slap or large tolerances on the pistons. So first get a fuel contoller. Second go with some wiescos pistons because the tolerance are much tighter. This is what the "fix" is selling that has been posted here on SW.

haven't had any real symtoms but just wanted the dealer to take a look at the pistons for some wear. was out in island park a couple of weeks ago and could not pull real good R's. (7780 to 7850) 10-58 weights all the problems people are having have just made me nervous. told the dealer if i can not get any warrenty that i will probly go with the fix from pms. have 750 for miles on the sled 550 after update was done. talked to dealer today and they said there was some slop in the pistons. i have that is where it starts. anybody have any suggestions it would be much help !

I feel for you bud. I got a $4500 bill after Polaris denied my warranty on the 4th burn down of my 09 D8. After the new updates were done, not even a month later I lost a crank bearing which took out the crank. My guess is something got into there on one of the previous burn downs. Denied because I removed the hood foam and replaced with heat tape. They said I "must have had a pipe on it" without anything to back that claim up. Got the same sob story from them as you. I was die hard Polaris and now I'm riding Cats with my closest dealer now twice as far away. Put even more miles on my M8 and no motor issues....just breaking primary clutches!!! As much as the new pro looks to be the sled to beat, I just can't give Polaris my $$$ this soon after how they treated me. I know how you feel, it sucks.

This might help with your clutch problem. ABC kit from Thunder Products.

welp...talked to the dealer today. It needs a sort block since i can stick my fingers through it. He quoted me 4490 something for the new one. I said no. I refuse to spend that on a sled motor. I rebuilt a International 1256 DT 407 tractor engine that arrived to me in a box. It needed major machine work done to it since its dry sleeved they had to be milled out. I had about a grand less in that than this little 800cc. Just rediculous.....id probably get more enjoyment out of smashing this thing up with my excavator and taking it up to Minnesota and leaving it at the Polaris HQ at this point. Its worth nothing to me anymore.

So now what are my options lol....find a wrecked 800 and swap the motor out? Anyone want a 09 dragon with a bad engine....rest of the sled is in immaculate condition! It gets alot of looks and attention....just needs an engine lol.

Im in the same boat as you my friend. Upon closer inspection of my case, there is a hole in the bottom of it. This blows, now I got to spend a **** load of money on it to be able to sell it. Im waiting on CV Tech to get back to me with a quote to repair.

FYI I sold my '09 Dragon with a blown motor for $4500 last spring. You're not totally screwed here... For the $6500 I would have been able to sell it for fixed last spring, it was well worth it to just sell it as is and take the hit right away instead of investing more $$$ into it with a hope of making more out of it.

thefullmonte,
Thanks for the link. I've been thinking of trying that out for a while now. Might have to give it a shot. I almost want to put the P85 on this M8 LOL!

I agree with CO 2.0. Cut your losses and walk away from it. It costs almost as much to fix it as what you could sell it for. It just doesn't justify putting anymore money into it. Most people are avoiding these 800's like the plague. $4500 is more than half the value. I think most would consider that to be a total loss.

"THE FIX" by MTNTK FOR 2008-10 DRAGON'S RMK'S

How “THE FIX” came about! Another 1st from MTNTK Performance & DYNO
MTNTK Performance has done it again. They are in the business to find solutions to the problems many have been having in this industry. Whether it has been different turbo manufacturer major issues or even minor complaints, MTNTK Performance is committed to building the best products that work, period. Last year MTNTK came out with the Big Boost Turbo for the Dragon, for 2011 MTNTK has a sweet “Pull the Rope and Ride” turbo system for your 2011 Pro or RMK. They have also spent considerable time on a new product called “THE FIX” for the burn down plagued 08-10 Dragon and RMK's “THE FIX” comes with a set of new taller pistons along with a cylinder shim, longer cylinder bolts and alignment dowels. This is designed to eliminate the piston rocking in the cylinder bore which is the real reason for the engine going down. By doing this it boosts power by 5 horsepower and peaks 100 rpm higher than stock, but they did not create it for the horse power gain alone, they did it so the rider can keep riding on that good snow when the snow is good.
(THE FIX) sells for $585 and a local Polaris Dealer near you can install it. Or you can always come over to southern Idaho and have us install it.
The kit includes:
2 Hard Anodized/Friction Coated Forged Pistons
1 Plated Cylinder Shim
8 Longer Cylinder Base Bolts
1 Base Gasket
2 Cylinder Alignment Dowels
1 Set of Instructions
$585 plus tax and frt
www.pmspolaris.com can install for right around $300 or you can have your local Polaris dealer or local shop install it. Thanks for the interest in it. I can answer any more questions if you need.
We have a rental company using them and we even have them in turbocharged engines without failure. Yes they are Wiseco forged pistons, hard anodized and friction coated.
We have been running these kits since last winter and have done teardown evaluations which we take the pistons out to inspect and they look great. It has been crazy how fast these kits are going out the door, and we are building them as fast as possible to keep up with demand, Let us know and we will get you on the list. This is a long term solution to the durability issues Polaris 800 engines are experiencing. Everyone that has put one in and rode with it has commented on the snap the motor has in the midrange and how much quieter the engine seems. It makes the engine seem like it wants to pull harder and longer than it did before. Hope this helps and look forward to talking to you.

Before switching to another brand maybe you want to consider switching to a 2011 or 2012 PRO RMK? I know there expensive but well worth the money.... just my two cents
I have seen many post of compaints and threats of class action suits. It it up to us as the consumer to say enough!!! Polaris has not built a sled worth a damn this decade. I have owned a 2000 800 a 2006 900 and now a 2009 d800. wow the money I have spent to keep these piles of $hit running with next to no help from polaris. I am done!!!! I am suprised that the dealers are not in an uproare. I have told mine that I would like to continue doing buisness with them but I have got to do my part by switching brands!!!!!! It is hard to bash my polaris because I love to ride the dragon chasis but polaris reliability and accountability is a joke. I selfishly want to keep from hurting my resale but I am not a polaris salesman and if I was I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. Just my $35,000+ cents and counting

09DRMK:

Sorry to hear about your issues. You mentioned the update rebuild 400 miles ago. I would be curious to see what your dealer finds out when he breaks the motor down. Look at the injection system O-rings and see if they are pinched or cracked. One of my riding pals just lost his right side hole on his 09 D8 and it was because the guy who did the update didn't lube the O-ring and it dried out/cracked/pinched and caused a lean condition and the motor went "poof". Needless to say, he was pissed when he found out. His was still under warranty, but still cost him about a $100. They did new cylinder, pistons, and head.

Yup, it would be nice if Polaris stepped up, but it ain't gonna happen.

Good luck.

Triple S made that same mistake on Dragon Freak's RMK after they installed the update.

My D8 just went down too.... argggghhhhh

If all I needed were pistons and a cylinder, I would be all over this kit but my engine as a whole is pretty much toast. Im gonna have to see what I can scrounge up for parts and sell it later on.

Have you given any consideration about slipping a 700 into your sled? I'm on my second one and no issues. I didn't want to go through all the BS that a lot of you fellers are having with the 800's. Other guys on this site have gone for the 7's because of all the issues on the 8's.

I do like your idea of parking your sled on Poo's doorstep or at least somewhere in Roseau and maybe a big sign stuck to the sled -- Another fine POS from the Polaris folks.

What's really scary is that I hear starting next year that Poo sleds will be assembled in Tacoville. Quality control at it's finest. That should be interesting.

No i haven't really considered a 700 since id love to ultimately trade it off. If i couldn't fit 3 fingers through my block and have 2 cracked cylinders....id be all for that kit. At this point there is no use now. Plan is right now to bid on a few wrecked 800s and swap the good motor for mine. Sell the remainder of the parts. Hopefully i can recoup some of my loss and get the beating over with and snow-check a new ski doo for next season. If anyone has a good 800 engine or wrecked sled they are looking to get rid of let me know.
