Hey everyone,

So a few weeks ago I lost the motor in my sled. I have slowly been tearing it down to see what I need to do to fix it. I have a question about the case. It is a little scared up but from the picture you can see do you think that it is salvageable or should I start fresh? I know it probably depends on what happed on the inside as the crank ground chunks of piston across the case, but I am just trying to figure out how much this is going to cost me.

Thanks guys

i wouldn't reuse that case if it was mine could cause you to loose the motor again. spend a little more now or a lot more later is what i say.

Thats kinda what I figured, just needed someone else to tell me. Guess i'll be puttin in some overtime so I can ride again this year. Thanks for the input.

case is not junk at all... i just had one machined... look for cracks in the case, get them to blend that peice in.. basically smooth it out. but the crank on the other hand is going to have to be taken apart and bearings replaced.

That could be an option if there is a shop that can do that for him. How much did it cost to get it machined?

I still think I would go with a new one on the 900 motor if it was mine.

i can't remember but i know to get the crank looked at and inspected.. then have to rod replaced was about 300 just labour, i think the cases cost me about 75 for weld and blend.. they don't actually weld the case intake or add metal, they just make sure there is no high spots or anything protruding... and this was there argument, which i agree with, at first i was like well that jagged edge will cause poor flow and turbulence.... lol there is a crank spinning at 8000+ in there, if anything it will help atomize the fuel going in. all assuming the cases didn't tweak.

also just took it out today, so far so good one tank of gas and it runs mint.

That repair IS possible... but then again.. the case is probably hammered and you will need to get it line bored..

How much is a discount new crankcase... $400 or less.

i found cheapest is cheap snow parts.com. babbits is cheap but for me there shipping is RIDICULAS. so at Cheap snow parts, its about 500ish. lol the question is how hard did it hit the case... was it like mine and send out the back of the engine? if thats the case then i would look at new cases... if your cases don't have any cracks you might be okay.

The other question is how out of spec is your case on the PTO side. If you have a lot of miles on the sled the cases may be out of spec and it will just contribute to future crank failure. Better to play it safe and spend the money to get new cases.

Well i got the motor out and tore it down yesterday and it turns out that there is a hole in the bottom of the case about the size of a dime. I am just going to replace the case, rather be safe than sorry. Thanks for all of the input though.
