05 polaris 800

I had a sled like that. She was pretty good to me. I rode it hard but the crank let go on me at about 2300 miles, the whole engine was toast. Cases were cracked, pistons and cylinders scored. I rebuilt it with OEM pistons, replated cylinders, and a big bearing crank. I ran it for another 1000 miles with no other probs. I did not try an SLP kit for it but the ones that I saw run with it were quite a bit stronger than mine. I wish that I had gotten the 159, but it still got around OK. Overall I liked the sled, but I have since moved on and tried a couple of other sleds.

I have that sled, but it is a 144". i like the sled alot, but the crank let go about 1900 miles:mad:. got it rebuilt and beefed up and put back in... i was pretty lucky that all i had to do was replace the crank since it hadn't done any damage. and since i have put the slp powder pro skis on there i love how the sled handles as opposed to my buddys 05 skidoo summit. his just feels like a tank.

Great sled. I still have mine, it started as an 05 switchback but now has a 159 2.125 paddle with 10" inside rear wheels. Have 3200 miles on it and the crank hasnt went out yet. But i am going to rebuild the motor this fall and get the updated wide bearing for the crank just so that it wont go out. The crank is the only flaw with the motor. If it has the wide bearing you should be safe "should be" haha. But overall a strong machine and you should like it i would think. Just take care of them and you should be fine.

Thank You all for your input. How could I tell if the bearings are the "updated wide bearings" short of tearing the engine apart? The sled has 630 miles on it.
Would I be better off having the crank changed before I even ride this year?

I agree check the runout with a dial indicator if you can get ahold of one. They say if its within .004" of being completely round then it should be fine. Im not totally sure if there is a way to check if it has the wide bearing without taking the motor apart to see. If it does or if not sometimes you can get lucky and catch it before it goes. It makes a wierd noise, kind of hard to describe but thats if your lucky, some just go when the go! Best of luck to you.

We mostly do boondocking and get into some areas that would be really difficult to "drag a dead sled" out of. I'm thinking I should take it in while there is no other damage and have it fixed. Any recomendations on a really good mechanic?

I would just do it before you have any troubles. I had a local engine builder do mine and I think it was less then 200 bucks plus there is some oil passages that they make bigger. For the cost of the preventative work its way worth it considering what it could cost if she comes apart.
