04 Trail RMK With Fuji 550 Fan, Timing???

The 04 deep snow manual (leaves a lot to be desired for a factory manual) says to use a dial indicator to mark the fly wheel then hook up a timing light to verify it's timed correctly. Problem is that this manual covers many sleds and is specific to none. Also, The fan itself which is attached to the flywheel and balanced with the flywheel has a mark on it and the plastic recoil cover has a bunch of lines and the letters IG toward the left end of the marks. I held the fan up into the rcoil cover and found that the mark on the fan is right below the marks on the cover indicating that these marks sre for timing (have no idea what else they could possibly be for). If they are timing marks then which mark on the cover represents the correct mark for timing versus the fan/flywheel? I sure would like to check the timing after the melt down I had before I ride this thing.

Stator

I'm going to be changing out the stator on my 2002 to be able to have PERC. I was hoping it would be like the other Liberty engines where there is a line on the case and on the stator that you line up.

On the other motors the flywheel does have markings and they can be seen through a small hole on the top of the recoil mount.

I think I will make a mark for alignment when I reassemble if there isn't one from the factory installation.

Right or wrong, I've never put a timing light on my sleds. I will be interested to read the comments of others on this issue.

Yea Mark, that's the way I have always done it too...static with no light. That tells you everything is in line rotationally. I guess the reason you may want to put a light on it is becuase the CDI could be screwed up and telling it to spark at thy wrong time although I have to admit that's probably not going to happen often if ever.
