03 700 track tension

i have a 03 700 and was riding in DEEP stuff and the track sounds like it is skipping. When i checked my chain tension it was loose and my track is loose also. My question is why would both of these loosen off at the same time? I try to watch these things but it just happend one day. maybe a bad belt? bad bearing? I need a little help thanks

A chain will get looser as it wears, thus the periodic check being necessary. The chaincase bearing rarely fails, it's usually the spedo side that goes. Could have bent rails also causing it to ratchet. It probably just stretched out though.

Have you made any suspension adjustments recently? This will make the track tighter, or looser. As mentioned, sus damage could also make it loose. If you don't normally ride in deep powder, it could have been stretched and you did not notice. If the suspension hasn't been greased in a long time, it may not be fully returning, making the track loose.

the deep stuff is the only stuff i try and ride in.would moving the limiter strap for powder riding do it? i did do that this winter.could it have anything to do with jackshaft and/or bearings?

If your limiter was in the middle position, putting it in the bottom position would make the track tighter. If you moved it to the upper, yes it would make the track more loose. The jackshaft/jsht bearing would affect the chain, not the track.

i moved it to the bottom so it should be tighter but it is real loose.i kind of leaning towards a bearing problem.I read in a other post about the speedo not working due to bearing problems on that side and my sled has not worked in a long time.i see a pattern here!!!

This would be the drive shaft bearing, not the jack shaft. Like Ski mentioned, the speedo bearing is a common failure. If the speedo quit a long while ago, it is likely this bearing. The bearing and shaft could be bad enough to cause the chain wear and track to be loose. Remove the speedo housing below the secondary for a look.

thanks for the bad news:heh: the bad part is that it was gone for a while and it worn the diveshaft itself out where the bearing rides so it looks like a new driveshaft also.thanks for your help SD Coyote.what is the trick to getting the rear skid out.can't seam to loosen the 4 mounting bolts.one side is loose and the other just spins

It is easiest to use an air tool. After you spin one side loose and the bolts are turning freely, retighten them fairly snug. Now loosen the other side. It may take a few tries, you just need to break all four loose and keep the shaft from spinning inside.

The good news is the drive shaft can be rebuilt for much less than the cost of a new one. There was a recent thread about this with pictures of a damaged shaft. Do a search for good info.

i'm not sure if u can fix this shaft? i would like to get a used one from a used place but can't find someone who sell stuff for polaris machines.could't find the thread on the shaft u talked about SD Coyote.i would love to see it.Anybody have any parts for 03-05 rmk?
