Cranky Neighbors and Sled Noise

How many of you have neighbors that complain about loading sleds late at night or early in the morning before you leave to go ride, and how do you deal with it?

I have elderly neighbors that live kitty corner from me that have complained multiple times over the years about loud snowmobiles. March of the second year I moved into my place the morning "rally point" was at my house where everyone met and loaded in the trailer. They left a note with the dates and times of three weekends when the "disturbances" occurred. Recently I got a phone call about having the door open running a sled at 11:00pm to align a track. Got a whole spiel about how they wake up at 5:00am every day and work 12-14 hr days on their "ranch" and don't need to be woken up late at night. Kinda half threatened to turn me in for city noise ordinance violation. Which is nothing louder than 55db at your property line between the hours of 8pm and 7am. 50-60db is in the range of a normal conversation. It's 215' from my garage door to the corner of their house and 180' from the end of my driveway. So it's not like we're butted up right next to each other. They are in county and I am the last house in city limits.

My neighbors directly next door and the other ones same distance kitty corner the other direction have never complained.

We have 2-1/2 to 3hr drive wherever we go so it means loading sleds at 5:30-6:00am. My riding buddies are scattered across the county so it doesn't make a lot of sense to drive around the night before and load. On top of that I usually work late all week so I'm getting the sled ready late the night before. So I'm sometimes loading in the back of the truck at 12:00/1:00am. I'm not a huge fan of leaving my stuff out in the middle of the night either with the rate of theft in this town.

Ultimately, I think I just need to get the heck out of town, but with real estate prices here easier said than done! Before next season I think I'm going to tell them they have to pick if they want me making noise at 12am or 5am when they supposedly are already up.

thats the long term solution to be sure.

If they get up at 5, the early morning loading sessions should not be an issue. I would point that out along with an apology for the 11PM wrenching.
I would extend a courtesy of fore warning of upcoming off hours noise events. You both gotta get along, and how is it gonna go if they do formally complain? Or find something that annoys you to get even? Life's to short for drama. Nip it in the ass.

Did they only communicate via the notes? Or did they actually have a conversation with you?
Sometimes just having a normal conversation about things (perhaps over a coffee or a few beers), getting to understand each others pov can help.
And maybe if they know beforehand the noise will be there, like those weekends when you are the 'rally point', they might mind less.

My next door neighbor has decided he is a Cattle Barron now.
Last week he bought a heard.
This morning I found them in my backyard.
Notice this is a nice high end housing development, NOT out in the rural area.
Eventually they all wandered back to his lot.
I could call the guy and raise hell, but what good would it do.
Better to get along with the neighbor and help him learn to tend his cows..

My next door neighbors are my parents 1/4 mile away. They hear plenty of sleds and subs.
Suck it up sissy’s.

I live in a subdivision with mostly higher end homes. The types that walk their dogs and ride bikes/cross country ski for exercise not so much sledders and guys with Harleys in the garage. As a general rule I try not to load after 9pm or before 8am but I do have a shorter drive than you to get riding. I also quit using cans and just leave the stock suitcase on and I try to just start it and let it warm up a bit idling (operating temp) and then load, no pissing around with it. I have yet to have a complaint.

I always load up the day before and do it before 8pm and lock my stuff up . I prefer to have happy neighbors as they are also the neighbor hood watch as am I. I watch their stuff and they watch mine. Way easier in life being friendly with people than being at odds. Watch the TV series "fear thy neighbor" kind of an eye opener on where things can go in a hurry

That's the thing, the early morning noise was the issue before. Wife said the husband was recovering from a surgery and needed his rest. That's understandable, but not for the entire month. Being that they are in the county and I'm in city I don't know if they would even have a leg to stand on filing a city complaint. Still, I don't really want to find out.

The 11pm offending sled was a ZR200 . It does have a speedwerx pipe on it though and is about as obnoxious as one of those can get. I told my roommate that was enough rapping his daughters sled at that hour.

The first time where they cited the instances was a letter taped to my door with their phone number. I called and had a conversation with them about it and explained why we were loading so early in the morning. I told them it wasn't planned to be every weekend, but it just worked out that it was almost 3 weekends in a row. Sometimes it was just going to happen. My house hasn't been the rally point since. Now we meet at one of the gas stations most of the time and consolidate there.

They called me with the latest complaint. I thought we were good since I hadn't heard from them in a while. I'm not going to call them every weekend we go sledding. I'd rather come to some kind of agreement that there is either going to be loading noise at night or in the early morning. It'd be another thing If I was going every weekend, but shoot I only rode 5 days this season and went to two vintage races!

a burning bag of dog 💩 on their Porch should help escalate the fight.

It sure would! I have enough of it around with my two big Bernese mountain dogs. Not looking to escalate the situation at this time though.

That's basically what I do. Open the door, let it idle for a minute, then straight into the truck or trailer that's backed up in the driveway. The speedwerx supercharger didn't come with a suitcase though . Sometimes it's 10pm when I get back to the house and I usually wait until the next day to unload if that is the case.

Couple things to add from the original post:

I did let one of my friends that is going through an UGLY divorce right now crash at my house since last July. He picked up a sled too and works out of town all week. So he is adding a bit to the weekend snowmobile activity. He definitely has a bit of a "F*** 'Em" attitude towards life in general these days, but he isn't doing hot laps in the neighborhood either. I'll let the neighbors know he probably won't be around next winter. However, if I end up with a girlfriend or wife here with me that is into the sport someday then there would be two sleds moving around there again.

I do have a sound meter. When I load sleds up in the trailer for summer storage this week I'm going to go to my property corner closest to the neighbor's house (maybe even across the road) and see how loud it really is there. That'll give me some actual data for the conversation about a long term solution. It's likely louder than the very low limits allowed by the ordinance, but if by some chance it's 60db it's fair to let them know they are being a bit sensitive too. They have called me the day after hearing random motorbikes (not me) go down the road at late night hours just to see if I noticed the "strange activity." If they really want to cut the noise they should bother the sheriff to sit at the road intersection and ticket the street racers and straight pipe diesel trucks flying by at 50mph (35 zone).

That would be ideal, but it's rarely possible with my schedule. That's the relationship I have with my neighbor directly next door.
