His competitive nature also found outlets when the snow melted. One is in the rodeo arena. Some might say rodeo also runs in his blood. “My family and their ancestors have always been involved in rodeo,” Mathews says. With many career wins, making the college national finals, and placing 13th in the nation, Mathews has seen success on this stage as well, although he was not without his naysayers.
“Lots of people used to think I was crazy at times when I would say I wanted to do this or that, then I made it happen and I was successful,” Mathews says.
While he has had injuries in both sports, including a broken shoulder blade in a hillclimb crash, and many injuries on the rodeo circuit, he considers himself lucky to be healthy most of the time.
“Knock on wood!” he jokes.
Having big dreams and the persistence and passion to pursue them drives Mathews. He’s also naturally curious, with a desire to see how far he can go.
