2020 Timbersled: A Real Riot
We’re not sure if Polaris’ names for its snow vehicles for 2020 are some sort of subliminal message or outright declaration but after seeing the Timbersled Riot snowbike kit join the snowmobile RMK Khaos in the company’s lineup for next year some sort of statement is being made.
Even the marketing line is similar. Whereas the Khaos is billed as an “All Mountain Sled,” the Riot is a “more all over the mountain kit.”
Here are highlights of the new Riot, which comes in two versions, the stock model and LE version.
- Polaris claims the Riot is “most dirt bike-like in any snow conditions.” In a graphic we saw, it looked like the Riot is better positioned to ride in packed snow than other Timbersled kits. As the snow gets deeper, riders should perhaps consider the ARO, although the Riot can still tackle deep snow. So, is the Riot made to appeal to more Midwest or eastern snow conditions?
- Polaris also claims the track acts “like a tire.” Dual shocks in the rear suspension have been optimized for better control and “playfulness.”
- The stock Riot uses Timbersled IFP Shocks, which are lightweight, rebuildable and tuned specifically for this kit. The Riot LE uses Fox QS3 Shocks, which are also tuned for this Timbersled kit and optimized for wheelie control.
- The single arm rear suspension is lightweight and more rider responsive.
- The rear suspension also has new, lightweight suspension rails.
- A new snow flap provides better rider protection while also helping to eliminate snow buildup in the tunnel.
- The Riot frame is also lightweight and features the proven Aro kit durability and strength.
- The drivetrain has improved serviceability and convenience.
- Polaris uses the well-known and industry-proven EK Chain.
- New lightweight sprocket gives increased responsiveness.
- There is no change to the Timbersled spindle but there is a new ski skag to improve steering.
Still in the Timbersled lineup for 2020 are the:
- Ripper
- Aro 129
- Aro 137 LE
- Aro 120 SX
- Aro 129 LE
Not On Board With This
A couple of new features for select 2020 RMK models include PowderTrac XT Running Boards (exclusive to 850 Pro RMK 155 and 163) and new lightweight XT Hyfax. As for the running boards, they’ve been redesigned to allow the rider to lean further in deep snow or while sidehilling while still having traction. This traction is especially helpful for the rider at the back of the boards.
