Fort McMurray: Recovery and Resilience In Aftermath Of Fires

Published in the February 2018 Issue August 2018 Feature

Fort McMurray is one of the few areas in Alberta with absolutely unrestricted riding available. We are not a farming community so there is no barbed wire to bar our path. Our entire system sits on Crown land and the RMWB (Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo) as our largest sponsor and partner helped us tremendously throughout the year. The Sno-Drifters are looking to expand our system to include a trail that connects us to Conklin. This would eventually hook us up to the Iron Horse system and then the Trans Canadian Snowmobile Trail, which crosses the entire country at over 18,000 kms. This would increase tourism to our area and open up our trails to even more out of town riders.

Another thing about the Sno-Drifters is the wide age range of members. The club has a very large number of younger riders with families and it gives our club an energetic, youthful mentality. We are not scared to implement changes to keep up with our members’ needs. The same adventurous drive that enabled so many people to pick up and move to our area is reflected in the can-do attitude of our members and board. They are energetic and focused on doing the work needed to bring our trails back to their former glory. Through their dedication we have completed most of the work needed to do so.
