2019 Ski-Doo Summits: Effortless Agility, Powerful Mountain Performance

February 2018 Feature

Go where others won’t. Conquer what others can’t. Mountain snowmobiling is not just about climbing the next chute, tearing through the next technical tree line or slaying the next zone of fresh powder. For a Ski-Doo mountain rider, it’s not about taking the road less traveled; it’s about creating his own road to the summit. Seeking out new challenges and pushing boundaries is second nature for Ski-Doo mountain riders.

Giving mountain riders the ability to meet those desires is central to BRP’s Ski-Doo development team efforts, recognizing today’s mountain riders need a sled that utilizes the energy they are willing to expend on a ride in a more efficient manner, so they can push even further.

Enter the 4th generation REV platform and 850 E-TEC engine. With engine mass centralized in the narrow, agile REV Gen4 chassis, mountain riders have an ideally balanced machine that responds on cue to rider input, greatly reducing the amount of rider effort required to maneuver the sled in steep, technical terrain. The slim profile of the side panels allows the rider to freely move around the sled, get further forward on the running boards, and enables greater lean angles into sidehills.

For 2019, the powerful and dynamic 850 E-TEC engine is joined by its smaller sibling—the 600R E-TEC engine—available in the in-season Summit SP in 146- and 154-inch lengths, including a Ski-Doo exclusive 3-inch lug in the 600cc engine class. Sharing some of the same technology as the 850 E-TEC, the 600R E-TEC is capable of producing much the same dynamic response as its big brother, but in the smaller 600cc engine class. Both engines are capable of utilizing the advanced SHOT starter system developed by Ski-Doo last season, further lessening a rider’s effort output by reducing the number of energy-consuming pull starts needed throughout a day’s ride.

Having a sled as responsive and powerful as the 2019 Summit line offers means one thing to a mountain rider: Less effort is required to ride, meaning riders can spend more time carving powder turns, climbing steep ascents and sidehilling technical terrain.

As mountain sleds continue to grow more popular in lower elevations, BRP is again offering two calibrations for the drive train on Summit X models (only); one for high altitude, above 4000 feet, and a sea level calibration for those who ride below 4000 feet.

Snapshot - X

Today’s mountain riders are driven to conquer the unexplored. They want to discover. The guilty pleasure of being the first to crest a mountain peak and plunge into untracked powder bowls is what drives a rider to take on that extra technical tree line, or challenge just one more steep climb. For that mountain rider who wears that attitude with pride, and dares to seek out demanding riding zones pushing themselves harder on every single ride, the Summit X delivers.

The 2019 Summit X caters to the seasoned mountain riders who desire the industry’s premiere mountain riding experience. Offered as a Spring-Only buy in three track lengths—154, 165, and 175 inches (392, 420, 445 cm)—the Summit X offers an effortless riding experience that allows riders to get more time out on the snow. The ease of maneuverability that comes from the combination of the responsive engines and supremely agile REV Gen4 chassis partnered with a highly capable suspension package simply requires less exertion from the rider to get the instantaneous response riders crave from their sleds.

With dynamic power and commanding throttle response, the 2-stroke 850 E-TEC is capable of dramatic ascents, and the precision needed to meticulously pick a path along a treed sidehill.

Further improving the mountain sled ownership experience is the choice of two new color schemes, including a new Ultimate Lava Red with an enhanced protective finish coating that protects panels against scratches and blemishes to preserve the sled’s unmistakable character. There’s also a new Octane Blue/Black coloration that stands out from the crowd.

Platform

REV Gen4 platform: The open design of the REV Gen4 mountain platform allows riders to ride freely with their own style, attacking terrain as it suits them instead of the sled. Designed to be the most agile, responsive sled in the mountains, the side-to-side centralized mass creates a sled that’s ultra-responsive to rider input, making it easy to initiate sidehill and carving maneuvers even in the most technical terrain.

Suspension

tMotion rear suspension: The tMotion is both extremely agile and ultra-responsive to rider input. A simple shift in rider weight is all it takes for the sled move in the desired direction. A swiveling rear arm and split front arm allow the skid frame to flex laterally for easier roll up into a sidehill or carve. Rising-rate motion ratio adds capacity to handle big drops and comfort when riding the trail to get to the mountain. Optional adjustable limiter strap gives riders quick, easy choices in ride dynamics.

RAS 3 front suspension: Precise, predictable handling and outstanding bump absorption, even in harsh conditions, with state-of-the-art unequal length A-arm front suspension.

HPG Plus shocks: Highest quality KYB lightweight rebuildable high pressure gas shocks front and rear. Rebuildable and revalvable.

Key Features

Narrow, adjustable ski stance: Effortlessly roll the sled on edge with a 35.8 in. (91 cm) standard stance. Stable cornering on trails with the chassis’ low center of gravity. Stance can be easily widened to 37.4 in. (95 cm).

Pilot DS 3 skis: Precise control to easily hold sidehills in a ski specifically designed to work in tandem with the deeper and longer tracks. The Pilot DS 3 skis are a variation of the well-received Pilot DS 2 with a 12 mm deeper keel offering an industry-exclusive removable ski tip extension: ride with it in deep dry snow conditions for flotation, ride without in crusty conditions to minimize tip-up.

Track options:

  • 154 x 16 x 2.5/3.0 in. (391 x 41 x 6.3/7.63 cm)
  • 165 x 16 x 2.5/3.0 in. (420 x 41 x 6.3/7.63 cm)
  • 175 x 16 x 3.0 in. (445 x 41 x 7.63 cm)

PowderMax Light track with FlexEdge: Easily initiate sidehill maneuvers with flexible track edges that reduce the amount of effort required to set the sled on edge. Climb with authority thanks to the 3.5 in. (9 cm) pitch that not only reduces weight, but increases performance by keeping more snow between the lugs for better traction and keeps the sled on top of the snow. Lug design is stronger and lighter also, combined with the 3.5 pitch it leads to an overall weight reduction of 10 lb. (4.5 kg) on a 154 and 165 track with 2.5 in. (6.3 cm) lugs. Exclusive 16-inch (41-cm) wide design adds flotation and traction without sacrificing maneuverability. 154 and 165 available in either 2.5 or 3.0 in. (6.3 or 7.63 cm) lug heights; 3.0 in. standard on 175.

Ice Scratchers: Rail-mounted scratchers provide additional snow/ice spray for cooling in icy and hardpack conditions. Reverse-capable.

Tunnel design: More freedom for the rider to move thanks to the beveled shape allowing for narrow tank and seat. Open rear cap design eliminates drag in deep snow. Heat exchanger is integrated using cutting-edge friction stir welding manufacturing process for greater heat transfer, added strength and less weight.

UPDATED pDrive primary clutch: Fast and friction-free dual rollers transfer torque in place of traditional sliding buttons on this clutch. Oversized rollers with needle bearings, wide based flyweights and a shaft-on-shaft design emphasize smooth operation and long life. Ultra-responsive shifting, impressive rpm consistency, lightweight and maintenance-free. Fixed sheave is finned to circulate more air and when paired with the new CVT cover delivers better air flow and cooling.

Brembo disc brake: Hydraulic system from the world leader in brakes and X-exclusive racing-style pads provide powerful, fade-resistant stopping power. Steel-braided line.

Ergo-Step side panels: More comfort thanks to the ergonomic design of the rear section of the panels shaped to support the rider’s shins on downhills. Narrow profile and shape at bottom minimizes “paneling out” in sidehilling. Bottom pan is shaped for flotation in carving and sidehilling.

Profile running boards: Flatter foot positioning for more comfort and control. Snow easily evacuates for better grip. The super rigid extruded grid-style board prevents washout and reduces drag.

Open toe-hold: True freedom to choose. Enables rider to naturally and freely adjust footing on the running board. Optional toe-hold accessories available to customize the fit for all styles.

Snapshot - SP

Any day spent riding in the mountains can be a good day. Exceptional days are those when a rider has the energy to push themselves and the sled to new limits. Riders looking for those truly endless days in the mountains look to BRP’s Ski-Doo Summit SP snowmobiles to provide them.

It starts with the REV Gen4 architecture. Every detail of the chassis from handlebar riser to running board is crafted to create effortless, agile riding in deep snow conditions. With the far forward riding position and narrow chassis, a rider can maneuver easily around the sled and produce an immediate response without the need for exaggerated, energy-consuming movements.

The instantaneous response of the 850 E-TEC engine puts 165 hp at the tip of a thumb, ready to rip up one mountainside after another. For 2019 the Summit SP welcomes the 600R E-TEC to its stable of engine choices, available in the 146- or 154-inch track lengths. Even more, the 600R E-TEC, 154-inch track is also available with a 3-inch option, a first in the industry. Equally responsive, and dynamic in its own right, the 600R E-TEC offers the same precise power delivery as its bigger 850cc brother, but at 125 hp.

Adding to the effortless performance of the Summit SP is the advanced Ski-Doo SHOT starter system, giving riders electric start capability without the added weight of a true electric start system – in both the 600R E-TEC and 850 E-TEC engine configurations.
