Eerie night riding
The 14-mile return trip to Crane Lake was on a trail full of Saturday night moguls, but most of the way back to our resort was over the ice, where the smoothness was welcome. Mile after mile we traveled, the green reflective markers appearing out of the darkness to guide our way.
At one point, we stopped to take a break and as the last headlight was extinguished, we were suddenly in the midst of a black void. There were no stars visible and no lights in any direction, or any horizon visible for reference. It was an eerie, unsettling sensation that reinforced just how far from civilization we were at that moment.
The rest of the ride was fast and cold, but eventually we were back at the Sandy Point Resort, enjoying dinner after tallying a fun and leisurely 160 miles of riding.
Our final day was another enjoyable excursion westward. After cruising briefly on the Arrowhead Trail, we took the Hagerman Trail north to the Rat Root River. We jumped onto the ice for a quick 5-mile run to Ericsburg to pick up the Arrowhead again. Then it was west to the Blue Ox Grade and a quick jaunt southwest to Littlefork for lunch.
The afternoon portion included a fast cruise to International Falls, then east onto Rainy Lake and back south to our starting point. The mileage total for the three days was 400, with the majority of it spent enjoying the fantastic trails. With such distinctively huge lakes and plenty of snow, it’s no wonder that this is one of the premier areas for snowmobiling in the Midwest!
