Surrounded by dealerships
At the time dad began his search, the closest town had five dealerships and a population of 600 people. Crazy as it sounds, this was commonplace in much of Canada. Main Street bristled with a cross-section of machines. Buyers could check out the latest Yamaha, Alouette or Moto-Ski, and right along the rail lines at the grocery store stood the latest machines from Joseph Armand Bombardier.
Like so many rural villages, ours had a Ski-Doo dealership first, soon followed by others. At the far end of town Boa-Ski offered a line of ever bigger displacement engines with a good reputation for reliability. With a Moto-Ski already in the barn, you’d think dad was keen to have a second one. But no. He decided to try the newest dealership in town, the Auto-Ski!
We all assumed dad would buy a Yamaha. He’d spent hours admiring the big SL 443 model. The snow white twin-powered sled had ponies to spare, Autolube injection and a comfortable ride. But dad wasn’t sold on the idea of a kid at the helm of 30 horses. So when he heard his friend Arnold opened an Auto-Ski dealership, dad scrapped the Yamaha – much to our disappointment!
