Boy what a view!
Every direction was a treat and we could see distant ice-covered lakes as well as tall mountains. We took turns with the binoculars looking toward Quebec and Maine to the southwest. Miles of rolling wooded mountains seemed sugared with icing that March day. But the cold soon seeped in so we headed down.

Going back was tough since we had to avoid bad spots and got swamped many times. Once in the trees we built two big fires and warmed up our beans, thawed our sandwiches and got our tea water boiling. Uncle Gil took us on a side route to show us another ranger camp and that’s when the only real problem happened. The Moto-Ski rattled its carb cover mounts loose. Those old singles really shook things up and worked the bolts.

Once we got back to the vehicles we trailered up and took one more look at the mountain. We had Almost reached the top, and sometimes that’s enough … to create a family legend.
