Primary education

Q After 15 years in Florida I finally got bitten by the snowmobile bug again. I had my brother dig out one of the sleds from back in the day in Wisconsin, an early 1990s Indy chassis with Russ Lemke 780 Rotax motor – roughly 200 hp in a pro stock chassis. We put a Pro Line asphalt skid and skis on it and brought it to Florida to freak some people out. This sled always had the M-59 stage-six primary clutch in it, but only used three weights instead of the six. I would really like to know the correct way to utilize this clutch or switch to something else if this thing is not worth the hassle. Looking for a little help! – Zische331

A Flyweight mass will be very similar from 3 to 6 arms. An example is if you have three arms at 50 grams each it is a total of 150 grams, so if you go to a 6-arm you would be 25 grams per arm for a total of 150 grams. That is a good starting point for your set up. It may vary depending on some small dynamic variations, but should be close. The arms sometimes don’t even have to weigh the same. I have seen guys run three heavy and three lighter arms as long as the total was what the motor needed to run its correct RPM. Remember to have them alternating to keep the clutch in balance. – dyna-tek racing

Replacing the choke

Q I’m trying to install a primer on my drag sled. I’ve been told to splice into the feed line to the pump to feed the prime, but that’s not possible on my setup. Can I just poke a hole in the tank and run another line into it? – mutantboy699

A Yes, you can. Just make sure you get another thru-wall washer and also make sure you put a screened pick-up on it. If you have the room you could just ‘T’ off the existing fitting as well. – lakeside sledder

Sealing Crankshop carbs

Q I have the carbs split in halves. What should I use to reseal them when reassembling them? They had a gray sealer in the seam when I pulled them apart. I’m thinking case sealer. What do you think? – foxfarm

A A very, very thin coating of Yamabond grey or ThreeBond will work well for that. That should be what was on there to begin with. – dyna-tek racing
