Video games of tuning
Tuning on today’s powersports vehicles has now become similar to computer games. Wires, cables, laptops, USB ports, and sophisticated software are just a few of the new components needed in tuning the ECU’s fuel injection. Options are abundant in the aftermarket world, choosing the correct application for your tuning needs is crucial to the end result you achieve.
There are typically two types of programming available; ECU re-flash and piggy back style. Each one has its pro and cons but should have the same end results if both products are of equal tuning capabilities. The higher the quality the more accuracy there is in the tuning available, or the more bells and whistles. The old term applies on the programmers; you get what you pay for. Most consumers do not need all the extra options supplied with the programmer purchased, but the fuel injection portion of the programmer is necessary.
Dynamometers are a must
Tuning EFI systems of today require accurate tuning equipment. Dynamometers are a necessary item to properly tune the fuel injection system. With EFI programming having the capabilities to “pin point” a perfect location in the fuel injection map it is extremely important that the tuner has the capability of a loading dyno.
The dyno is able to hold the vehicle at that precise throttle position and rpm with the maximum amount of load at that location. This will allow the tuner to change the fuel map to have the proper air to fuel ratio (AFR) they are trying to achieve. After complete tuning the machine will have a custom “map” with the precise AFR in every location the vehicle will run.
In precise tuning there many variables, be sure that your tuning facility asks the correct questions and spends time to diagnose why the EFI programming is needed. Everyone is trying to achieve a different outcome from their programming. It is up to the tuning facility to help the customer achieve the end results he is expecting. A properly tuned snowmobile gives a clear mind and conscience to enjoy the day rather than controlling you.
