yellowstone roads closed until winter season

Amsnow
Yellowstone Park closed its roads for the season on Monday, Nov. 3. The closure will allow snow to accumulate for the winter season.

Roads are scheduled to reopen for the winter on Dec. 17, depending on the amount of snow.

Yellowstone will implement several changes affecting snowmobiles for the winter. Every snowmobiler entering the park must have a snowmobile entrance reservation, and only 950 snowmobiles will be allowed in the park each day. Snowmobilers traveling independently should call Xantera Parks and Resorts at 307/344-7311 to make a reservation.

Eighty percent of all snowmobile entrants will be commercially guided. Reservations for a guided trip must be made through the company. All commercially guided operators need to use snowmobiles that meet the park's best available technology (BAT) requirement. Non-commercially guided machines are not required to meet BAT standards for this year.

All snowmobilers will be required to pay the snowmobile reservation fee and the park entrance fee. A valid driver's license is required to operate a snowmobile in the park; no learner's permits will be accepted.

For more information about winter rules and guidelines in Yellowstone Park, visit the park website or call 307/344-7381.
